We had the good fortune of connecting with Maria Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Maria, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
This is my favorite question. I knew at a very young age that I wanted to work with flowers. I started my corporate career, but I knew that I would find a way to get to my true passion, which is being a florist. I got married, started my family, and still had the fire and determination to start my own business. I decided to start taking steps to start my business while I was pregnant with my third daughter. The first thing I needed to do was start floral school. I still remember the excitement and resilience I had to start this journey. The days were very long, and I worked every weekend and most holidays. After 10 years, I was able to move and upgrade my working space. As my children got older, they started to enjoy helping out in my shop while continuing their education. Now, it has been 30 years and I love seeing my grandchildren in my flower shop helping me at times. This really has been a fulfilling career that I made happen with a lot of work and determination. It truly makes me so happy to know that I have shown my girls that hard work pays off, and we should never let that little fire go away if we have a dream.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I have been in business for 30 years and I absolutely love working with flowers. I have thrived on keeping up with all the new trends, and my daughters have definitely kept me in the loop with social media. I have been married for 34 years to my husband who is my biggest supporter and craftsmen for the shop. At the beginning, it was definitely a struggle raising my family, working full time and wanting to have my girls with me as I worked. As far as consulting and working with clients, I have learned that it is very important to connect and build a relationship with every person you are working with. For a bride, this is one of their biggest days they have dreamed about and I want to make the planning process as smooth as possible. I believe that helping brides understand what their vision is and being able to come up with the floral design to make their day absolutely memorable is so important. I want Pearls and Roses Flowers to be remembered and as a loyal business that really cares about their clients.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to visit small shops and family owned restaurants locally. So, we would definitely shop at Old Town Spring, and grab a bite to eat there. I love going there when I can, because there are so many unique stores and one of a kind items you can find. We would also visit Market Street and enjoy everything the Woodlands area has to offer. During this visit we would go to Conroe and enjoy their restaurants on the water. I love that we have so much to do in our surrounding areas that cater to so many different desires.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out the small amount of Floral Wholesalers in Houston,TX. I have worked closely with Pikes Peak of Texas , INC for 30 years, and I am so thankful they are able to provide me with the flowers I need.
