We had the good fortune of connecting with Maritza Gonzalez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maritza, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always felt driven to start my own business and that’s the reason I pursued a business degree. After graduating, I started working in corporate America, and still do but I felt like I wanted to use my business knowledge for a bigger purpose. I combined my drive for building towards my future dream and something I enjoy doing, baking!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Pure joy in a little cake – a bundt cake! Yes similar in shape like the popular franchise, but our fans would say better. Our specialty is creating cake favorites in a new form. We have flavors from white chocolate raspberry to chocoflan – impossible cake. Have you ever seen a tres leches in a bundt cake shape? Well you can find that with us!

What sets us apart is bringing nostalgic moments with our sweet creations. We value our customers choosing us and that is why they deserve our best. From our ingredients, our service, our attention to detail and quality. We don’t want it to be just a purchase but an experience where you get to share a sweet moment with a loved one. And that’s our mission being complete – pass on the joy!

We are on our first year of this baking venture and we are very much still learning. It’s been a very fruitful year starting off even amongst a pandemic, but I wouldn’t put a pandemic as a barrier. I’ve learned that there will always be trying times when starting a business, apart from what the world is facing now. The difference of you bringing your business to the other side is how much dedication, consistency and risk you are willing to take. As an entrepreneur and business owner, you won’t just be able to be behind the scenes building your product. As proud as you are of your product, you have to share with every opportunity you get – that is bringing awareness. You have to reach out and find ways to market your business – NETWORKING is key. As a small business owner, you’ll spend hours and hours perfecting your product, developing your brand, and learning and growing. As you continue your journey it’s important to reflect on how far you have come and be proud of yourself! Don’t forget all you have accomplished and always be resourceful as you were helped or wish someone who have helped you.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When coming to the city I would definitely recommend staying downtown Houston and at hotels like the Marquis or Aloft. You’ll be in the heart of the city and can spend couple days in each part of town! Favorite food and spots to hang out by part of the city below:

La Calle Tacos & Tortas
The Rustic

Brennan’s on the Bayou

River Oaks/ Rice Village
Black Walnut
El Tiempo

Dish Society
Joey Uptown
Grand Luxe Cafe

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s many people that have helped me get to this point and have given me the support – my husband, my best friends, and family. But my mom and aunt are the reason why A’Bundt of Joy has thrived as it has to this day. They help me balance busy baking weeks with gathering materials, baking on late nights, to final touches with packaging. They have an eye for detail, and they have definitely inspired me for final design on some of our treats as well. And on the busiest day at markets you’ll always find them there present! Behind every successful company is a team, there’s no I in team, only a dream team!
