We had the good fortune of connecting with Matt James and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Matt, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I never wanted a real job. I fell in love with playing music in college and decided that I wanted to give it a shot after I graduated. I had one interview for an office job, and walking out of that place, I knew that life just wasn’t for me. Shortly after that I met our drummer Nathan and we’ve spent every waking moment since trying to turn our dreams into a reality.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It’s never easy to make a living doing anything creative. You face a lot of people who doubt you and think you’re crazy, especially in the beginning. As you go along in your career and trying to figure things out, you can get ripped off or scammed by people and you learn who you can trust or who you can’t. You may hit hard times and question why you wanted to try to start a band, or be a painter, or a writer, or whatever else in the first place. The people that last though, are the people who love what they do so much, that they won’t quit for anything. I’d like to think we’re those type of people and that’s why we’ve been able to do what we’ve done up to this point.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would probably take them to a show at Scout Bar or Warehouse Live, eat some good BBQ at Harris County Smokehouse, maybe go have some drinks at The Dirt Bar, catch an Astros game, and after that take a short road trip over to my buddy Ken’s Tattoo shop, HitList Ink in Humble to get some art and make sure we never forget our good times.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our families have supported us from day one with everything from buying our first instruments, to helping us form our LLCs, to guiding us when applying for business loans, to being the first (and only in the beginning) ones that showed up to watch us play. We owe everything to them.
