We had the good fortune of connecting with Mauro Murillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mauro, what’s your definition for success?
For me is to make a living with something that makes you happy and are passionate about.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I paint actors from Mexico’s Golden Age of Cinema, icons of the Mexican Revolution and other subjects within the culture. As a young child I watched old Mexican films at my grandparents home and both of my grandfathers use to tell me stories about the Mexican Revolution. Which is why I decided to adapt these themes to my paintings. My artwork can be described as colorful, expressionist style that transmits positive energy.
Art has been a part of me since I can remember, I was the typical kid that was always drawing during class. In my high school years I attended to Say Si art program, where I expanded my creativity by working with different mediums. Due to life circumstances I became a labor worker after high school to financially support my family. During those years I created artwork only for myself. It took me some years to go back to school to graduate with an AAS in Communication Design in early 2020. After graduating I took my work seriously and decided to start selling my paintings. I stand motivated and strongly believe in my art even when I started during the pandemic, when some considered art unessential. My question is: if there is no art why we even bother to exist? I seek to learn, experiment and evolve as an artist.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my friend to go visit several local breweries. Art museums, of course. Also, find some cool spots around town to take some photography. At night find a bar were we can check out some live music.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Local artists in San Antonio and Houston area. They inspire me to keep painting, stay creative and stay focus on my goals.
