We had the good fortune of connecting with Michele Lauryn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michele, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I grew up with a family that is all about the food at family gatherings. I’m the oldest of my siblings and I helped out alot around the house and in the kitchen. I have a grandma that would decorate cakes for our birthdays and would teach me how to cook and show me her ways when it came to baking especially. I always loved learning how to do things like she did.
I was going thru a rough patch in life and I would find myself watching Cake Boss at night and it was just always so mesmerizing watching a cake get decorated. One day I just decided I’m going to make a cake. So for my 1st decorated cake ever I made a Topsy-turvy tiered fondant cake. I was so frustrated with the process and watched YouTube videos to get tips and tricks of how to even make fondant or work with it! I did a learning as you go method. I was all in and felt it took my mind off of other things and it was a sort of therapy for me. After that cake I got so many compliments and words of encouragement and even people asking for orders when I was barely starting out.
That right there was all the positive vibes I needed and boosted my confidence. As I have gone on over time it’s always learn as you go and I’ve never held back. I put myself out there as my name is on the line so I really do try my best and put my all into everything I do.
Food art like decorating cakes and cookies is indeed Art! That’s why I love it AND I’m good at it so that just makes it more fun! The therapeutic side of being an artist is just a plus…
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There’s so many talented people in this world and to be a small business based on my talent and skills alone is rewarding. It makes me strive to do better with each order or purchase and I am free to be as creative as I want to be. I believe my best work is when the client let’s me freestyle the designs with just giving me an idea of a theme or color scheme they would like and just let me do me!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am a beach lover for sure! So I definitely love taking my family to the beach when I have free time to do so. My favorite restaurant on the island is The Spot. The food is good and the deck views of the water are nice. So our family will head to Galveston just to go down the sea wall, visit 61st street pier, eat at The Spot. Have a volcano brownie sundae and ride the underground ride at the Rainforest Cafe are some of our Galveston adventures.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I really believe my success comes from love. Love from my family, love from my friends, love from the ones that believe in me and most importantly the love I have from myself! I’m cautious but I am not afraid to take risks. I am an over thinker and analyzer but sometimes you just have to jump right in and do it!
