We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike and Jenny Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mike and Jenny, what principle do you value most?
The principle that matters the most to us is being faithful and consistent. There are not many things in life that happen quickly. You do not wake up and decide to run the Houston Marathon the morning of the race. Raising our children was a long, faithful process that we were committed to. We have been involved with many organizations where being faithful to the mission and taking small steps day after day has been integral to the success of the organization. We have seen that with Houston Haven as we started with one location and have now grown to 12 locations and 13 places to stay. We have seen this principle help us when we need to just keep taking small steps forward.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We work with Houston Haven, a Christian non-profit that provides low cost housing to individuals and families coming to Houston for cancer treatment. There are many excellent organizations that help with this need and our niche is that we are one of the few that really caters to families. Our housing allows people to bring their family here at a reasonable cost without having to have multiple hotel rooms, etc. We started around a dining table with five couples in the summer of 2018 and about a year later we had our first guests. It was a busy year establishing the infrastructure, raising some start up funds, building a website, etc. I think the lessons we have learned along the way are– to take one step at a time, plan well, be patient, pray a lot, and then watch what God can do. It has definitely been hard, as we are often housing families that are in pretty desperate situations, but it is such a great opportunity to love them unconditionally and in a small way, be an encouragement to them. We have thoroughly enjoyed our work with this organization.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Houston is best known for its food and people. Memorial Park is one of our favorite spots in Houston. It has a great golf course as well as great jogging and walking trails. NASA is another great spot to learn anything and everything you need to know about Space. If you are here during March, you have to check out the world’s largest rodeo and if you make it during baseball season, an Astros game should be required. If you’re into the arts, Houston has every genre of music you can imagine. As far as food, there are so many great options in Houston. You have to have some Tex-Mex while you are here and also experience some Texas BBQ. Beyond that, there are so many great options for trying other international foods.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We have a wonderful group of friends who have been on this journey with us and have provided financial support, prayer, encouragement, and have participated with us not only in Houston Haven, but in several other community ventures through the years.
