We had the good fortune of connecting with Nidia Cuellar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nidia, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
How do you do it? That is a question I get asked every time. How to balance work, being a mom, a wife, maintaining a house. Truth is, I don’t know either, I just do it. It is not an easy thing to juggle everything. I have great days and I have not so good days. What life has taught me, and it has taken some time to soak in, is that there are only so many hours and minutes in a day. Do what you can, in what time you can, the best way you can. Now being a hairstylist for 10 years, I can adjust my schedule more. I can prioritize if my children have a school event, to take clients until a certain time. I can extend my hours a certain day knowing my husband will hold down the fort back at home. It’s a balance that only you can figure out with time.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Looking back it amazes me how all these years in the beauty industry have flown by. Being a part of an almost 50 billion dollar industry, you have to find a way to set you apart from other stylist. Every year I try to grow as a stylist. I attend several classes throughout the year from top European stylist who give me different perspectives from across the world. I also go to expositions where there are vast examples of hair products, booths with the most up to date hair tools, and lets not forget all the hands on training from some of the best artists in the US. All my training and experience goes into every head of hair my hand touches. But what most sets me apart is I give my heart out in every service. I don’t just do my job, I love and enjoy my job! There are times where you do not know what you are capable of until you step out of your comfort zone. I am thankful that I am willing to try new things and avoid the fear of failure. Hair is art and art has no boundaries. I know no boundaries when I am working with my hair canvases. It is about creating something beautiful to bring out that inner confidence the client sitting in my chair needs. That is what being a hairstylist is all about.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Houston is such a huge and fun city I will not know where to begin! First stop must be going for a morning bike ride though the amazing trails of Buffalo Bayou Park. Feed our hungry tummies with some brunch at Backstreet Cafe with buttermilk biscuits. Now that we are in the neighborhood, a must stop is required at Dessange Salon to get shampooed and styled by me. During the week, definitely attend a baseball game at Minute Maid Stadium and cheer our Astros on. Now, in the evenings, Miller outdoor theater offers free plays from some of our rising artists in the city. After, a stop at the Saint Arnold’s Brewery Company for a quick tour and refreshments to Start of the night! A morning stop for a healthy bite to eat would be at Flower Child . Then a tour though all our lovely museums like the Natural Science or the Fine Arts Museum. Lunch will call for Sixty Vines for wine and pizza. A great dinner can alway be expected at Picos restaurant because who doesn’t love authentic Mexican cuisine. Night life begins at Dahlia with a great menu of unique cocktails. Dancing the night away would be in Cle’ and Aura!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank Dessange Salon for allowing me to flourish as an artist throughout these years. Secondly, Mom and Dad. Thank you for the the sacrifices you had to make while I was growing up, just to give me an opportunity at achieving my dreams.

But most importantly, to my three most loyal fans. My two beautiful children Dylan and Stella, thank you for giving me the drive I need every morning. And my rock, my mentor, my husband, David. You have pushed me to achieve more than I have ever imagined. You are my hidden strength. Thank you three for for being my best friends and sticking by my side through this crazy rollercoaster called life.
