Meet Octavia Shorter | Hair Artist, Entrepreneur, & Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Octavia Shorter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Octavia, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I feel that everyone possess the ability to create in different ways. Hair for me is a passion that allows my creative juices to flow. Some may see hair just as a difficult task, to me I see a blank canvas. I choose a career to create art and be able to spark the positive energy amongst each individual with this experience.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As a 12 year beauty professional, I can honestly say the path has not been of grace. I started my journey as an entry stylist JcPenny Salon, then became an assistant to a well known hair replacement stylist & company. Then went on to work as a full time stylist at Salons by JC for four years, now fast forwarding to co- owning my very first salon. There were so many hurdles that were a bit difficult and made me question if I even wanted to continue in this industry. There are so many stylists within this industry that it becomes so competitive, so finding your own lane is important. I’ve learned to celebrate me and wins no matter how small or big, it sets the tone for yourself being your own biggest cheerleader. I want the world to know that I’ve fought to make it to where I am and this is just the tip of the ice berg to what the future has in-store for me. I want to connect and inspire those within this beauty community while showing them how to value their work and business.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a Houston native I’m all about good food, good fun, and good vibes. We definitely would be starting happy hour at the Livin’ Room then over to Five Central for lamb chops and live music vibes. Ador also has great wings & pizza, then over to the Savoy. I do love a sit down upscale experience also, Prey & Bungalow do it for me every time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my success to my mother, who is the definition of a successful hard working women.. She has instilled in me so much that has helped develop me into the woman I am today. Years ago I was her purpose and now I stand full circle with my son hoping to showcase the hard working efforts she’s passed to me. Although she isn’t here to hear my success story, she is my guardian angel that continues to be my inspiration in spirit.
