We had the good fortune of connecting with Paula Anderson-Oliver and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paula, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

I am a Reiki Master and Intuitive Healer and I got started on this healing and energy work journey when my oldest son was born 6 weeks early. Through the trials we faced with him ( and myself), I was introduced to Reiki and our lives were changed for the better almost instantly. I had been diagnosed with PPD and PPA, that, coupled with his severe allergies, breathing issues, and the array of delays he faced, to say we were struggling is an understatement.

I became Reiki certified only as a way to help him, but soon found that there were SO many other mothers and children who could benefit from this amazing healing tool. I would have friends reach out to me to ask if I could do a session on their child, or for them and I saw the need for me to be able to share this gift with others. Motherhood is a hard journey, and sometimes it can be quite lonely, especially if you are struggling yourself or if your child is struggling. I decided to start this as a business as a way to help other moms to not feel so alone, to help other people know that suffering isn’t the only option and to help them see that there is something better on the other side of this pain!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is called Butterfly Effects Healing. I have always been drawn to butterflies because of the journey they go through to become themselves. They go from something not very attractive, to the most beautiful thing you have ever seen. Even in darkness, there is always beauty on the other side.

The butterfly effect to me means that every moment in our lives shapes us, every situation we have been in, molds us. Every single choice we make in life has led us to where we are today, and we wouldn’t be who we are without those moments.

I have been through some things in life that easily could have made me give up hope, give up on love, give up on having kids, give up on finding love… but I didn’t give up because I KNEW in my heart and soul there was more out there for me.

I went from renting space at an acupuncture studio where I had access to hundreds of clients, to moving 1000 miles away and having to start over in an online space. I am still learning how to navigate this, and I won’t ever stop trying!

I take these situations I have been in and use my struggles and lessons I have learned to help my clients. I believe that everyone has the right to be seen, heard and validated. I help light the way when you are at a crossroad and help you see the magic that is waiting for you!

The biggest lesson I have learned along the way is to keep going. Bad days, good days, just keep showing up. Spread your message, bring your joy! The world needs my gift, and I can’t share my gifts if I keep them hidden!

What I want the world to know is that I have been where you are, and I promise there is light on the other side!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When my best friend visits, we always have to go to the beach (of course)! We also love to go to the Marshwalk on a summer night, listen to the bands that are playing and watch the sunset.

During the day, we would take my kiddos to the aquarium, alligator adventure or even Broadway at the Beach to walk around or do some shopping.

We would make an appointment for a sound healing session with Javon Frazier and the Hidden Jewel Wellness Boutique and take a yoga class with Janeen Anderson.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Oh I love this question! Honestly, I have so many people who have been a part of my journey, I don’t even know where to start! My Reiki Master, and the person I was certified by Rachelle Crouteau would be the first person to mention. She saw something in me and truly took me under her wing. I can still reach out to her today, almost 12 years later to ask questions or bounce ideas off of. She opened my eyes to the world of energy healing, and without it I have no idea what my life would look like.

Leah Deluzio and Janeen Anderson have also been so instrumental in my journey. They came into my life when I felt that I wasn’t going to find my tribe here in South Carolina. We had just moved from Massachusetts and I left all my friends and family behind. They surround me with love, give me the hard truths when needed, but most of all they guide, mentor and support me. I truly would still be in the “woo” closet if it wasn’t for their support!

My friend and soul sister Carmen. She is my driftwood, she is my guiding light, she is a sound voice on the other end of the phone. She is the person I never knew I needed in my life!

Lastly, my husband Chris and my 2 sons! They are my biggest cheerleaders, my willing participants to try and ears to listen when presenting new ideas. I wouldn’t be half the person or healer I am without the support of each of them. They embrace my wild and crazy ideas, and they let me be myself unapologetically!
