We had the good fortune of connecting with Raylynne Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Raylynne, what is the most important factor behind your success?
For me, the main factors of success with anything I do are hard work. So many people forget that almost all successful people, projects, business, etc.. all started with an idea that led to hard work, long hours, blood, sweat, and tears that went into making that idea a reality. I have worked a lot of long days and nights throughout my career because I know that the product that I put out is a reflection of me and who I am and I want it to be represented the best way possible. With working for iHeart Radio I have been given so many opportunities that have helped me grow not only myself as a person but also Houston Film Fanatics as a brand and I could not be more thankful to them for that. So for me, one way to say thank you is to keep showing up and putting in the work.. In the end, It has always been worth it. Even in the times that certain ideas have not panned out like we thought they would, the experience teaches you something that you can usually use for the next idea or project, even if it is just learning what not to do.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have been working in Marketing/Promotions since I was about 13 years old. I love this kind of stuff. I used to work doing flyering at concerts and show when I was in my teens. Traveling around the city and to different places hanging posters or giving out demos for music shows or movies. I just find the creativity that goes into a lot of these ideas and campaigns fascinating. It is fun for me interacting with people and getting others excited new products or events. When I came to work at iHeart Radio (originally Clear Channel when I started) this was like a cream. I threw myself into this job as a part-time promotions assistant. It didn’t matter what event it was I was ready to work. Eventually, my manager noticed how much I loved working advance movie screenings and was even to the point where I was working them solo acting as the Emcee for these events and coming up with different games and activities to keep the crowd entertained he asked if I had any interest in starting and running a film page for the station. I said of course and that is where Houston Film Fanatics was born. He would get us booked at screenings or get DVDs or prizes for giveaways and I would set up the social posts, giveaways, write reviews, and even eventually start doing interviews with talent. I have worked like a madwoman doing all I can to grow the brand and I have loved it every step of the way. When we started we had zero budget so when we needed advertising materials like banners I put my art school degree to use and hand-painted them and honestly we still use those banners at screenings today. When we didn’t have equipment started buying stuff out of my own pocket so we would have the look of a professional crew until we actually became a professional crew. I went to comic cons and events on my own dime to give us additional content and giveaways. There was a lot that went into making HFF what it is today and I know through it all I have definitely grown from the journey. Now we are working world premiere red carpets and talking with A-List celebrities and are able to provide our listeners with giveaways on a regular. It has been an awesome ride. I will never forget the first time I was out at the zoo with my family and someone actually stopped me and went, “Hey, I know you, you with those film fanatics right?” It was a shocking experience, but one I will never forget. I can only hope we can continue to grow even more in the future.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
That is always a hard question for me because people always will say the same things. If you are here for a week and want to check out the sites you can spend the first few days hitting up the main tourist spots like Space Center Houston and the Kemah Boardwalk and of course Galveston. For me, I would always say check out our museums. I am a complete nerd but I love it. The Natural History and Science museum is totally my thing. Once you get past the major touristy stuff I would want to drag them down to 19th Street in the Heights. We can grab food at Torchy’s Tacos and hit up the antique shops and thrift stores. I would drag them to my favorite comic shops like Nan’s or Third Planet. We would have to head down to Montrose and eat at Common Bond at least one and then hit up Half Priced Books. On the weekend you could venture to Rivas Italian for their bottomless Mimosa brunch. Looking for fun later that night? Take in a drag show at Hamburger Mary’s or go grab some awesome fajitas at El Tiempo. The majority of my tour around the city would involve eating your way through it so as long as you are cool with that we can hang. lol

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I couldn’t be where I am today without the support of my management team here at iHeart Radio. From my bosses Melissa Brezner and Rob Skinner to my OG boss Conrod Thomas, they have really helped push me along the way and helped where they could to make all the hard work I have put in successful in a lot of ways. I have to give shout outs to my promo team who has always helped out when we are doing live events and movie screenings because they have come up with so many great ideas and have been awesome assisting with Emceeing at these events and being able to come up with ideas on the fly. I have to give it up to my videographer and occasional co-host when I can convince her to get in front of the camera, Marie Cervantes who has put in so many long hours and late nights working screenings and red carpets and interviews with me. She is a total badass in her field. And of course, I have to give tons of love to my family who has always loved and supported me no matter what crazy idea I have come up with. They have helped create swag, shared posts, and helped champion me every step of the way.
