We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanell Bradley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shanell, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
At first, I didn’t believe in work-life balance. I just believed that you needed to work “overtime” in order to get what you want and succeed in life. In my mind, there was no time for “fun”. Soon I realized this mindset was not beneficial to my health or my mental health. I began missing out on being present with my family and friends and even myself. Now, I really rely on my planner and I schedule my balance out. I give myself time to work but then I also give myself time to play because you have to have the balance of both or else you WILL burnout. Balance is essential to living a happy and healthy life. I believe in being effective when I work and I do that by taking out the time to pour back into myself. By doing that, I am not only able to perform better in my business and in my career but can show up as a better person, friend, family member and leave my contribution to the world.
What should our readers know about your business?
My blog/business began as a passion project, honestly. I have wanted a blog since 2012 but was too afraid to be vulnerable and put myself out there. I have a strong testimony but I had been so ashamed and afraid of my past and how other people would receive it. So many times I thought there is no way I could be someone people are inspired or influenced by. So, I sat on my story. I stayed silent for a really long time. Eventually, God got tired of me playing me (lol) and my purpose and pushed me to go ahead and start the journey. Love, Nell B. was born May 2019 and has been growing ever since. My brand was birthed from a place of transition. I went from a place of self-hate to self-love. Now that I have gone through my own healing process, I feel empowered to reach back and uplift millennial women who share similar stories. I invite my audience into my world and to join me on my journey of ups and downs. Learning how to transition. Essentially, we do life together so that the everyday woman knows she is not alone. No, this journey has been far from smooth. My biggest struggle has been imposter syndrome or not feeling “good enough” to do this work. I struggled to find myself worthy enough to share my life with people AND they receive it well. I really struggled with thinking if I was interesting enough to have people follow me and want to learn more about me. When I receive a message that I inspired someone to do better their life in some way, I almost go into denial. Like, that wasn’t me that inspired you to do that but in reality, it was me and it’s okay to receive that! So, really coming to terms with the idea that someone is influenced and inspired by my story so much that they want to live their best life, too. It’s a process but I am working through it day by day.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were to come into town, I would definitely take her to some of my favorite spots in Houston such as The Breakfast Club, Phil & Derek, Olive and Twist, and Gloria’s because I love it there! We would definitely hit up the amazing food trucks here in Houston as well. Some of the places I would take her is, of course, the Houston zoo. We would probably go to the Houston museum district, and Her Lounge because I’ve never been there before. We would do Painting with a Twist, Hermann Park, bike riding through the city, Houston Street Art and really just have fun. So, those are some of the fun places in my opinion that I’ve been to or things I’ve heard about that I really want to go to and visit. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Wow. There are so many people to who I can give a shout-out!! I have an amazing support system that supports me, encourages me, and has loved me through this process. I would like to first thank God! He has trusted me with this platform and has given me the story to share with others. Secondly, I’d like to thank My Girls – they know who they are! They have listened to all of my business ideas and given me feedback. I want to thank my best friends from back home, my trainer and workout partner, my friends from graduate school, as well as my big sisters who are always there for me and guiding me. Really, this shout-out is for anyone who has given me advice, shown me love, and supported me through this journey!! This is for you.
