We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamika Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamika , is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of BellaMe Wax & Lash Studio is our commitment to providing quality services while creating long lasting relationships to all clients that walk through our doors. Our clients, whom we lovingly refer to as “Bellas,” are our top priority, and our mission is to use high quality wax products in a safe, clean, and comfortable environment. Our clients walk in for the first time nervous, but after their appointment, they feel reassured that they have selected the right place for their beauty needs.
What should our readers know about your business?
BellaMe Wax & Lash Studio came into fruition after I was laid off in 2013. The toughest yet best decision I made was deciding to follow my passion and dreams instead of going back to Corporate America. It was not easy building a brand and getting customers through our doors, yet I stayed positive and continued to market, attend networking events, and most importantly, provide excellent service to everyone that walked through the doors. Slowly but surely, clients started coming to our studio, the positive reviews started coming in, and customers were referring their friends and family. The greatest lesson I have learned is to never get comfortable. I was comfortable in Corporate America and never saw the layoff coming. It was beyond my control and it had nothing to do with my abilities or performance. At my studio, we never get comfortable with the status quo. Every client, new and old, is treated as though it is their first time coming to the studio. The beauty industry is always evolving; therefore, we are constantly searching for new services and products that will help our Bellas look and feel their best.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
There is so much to see here in Houston, so my goodness, where do we start? When in Houston ,you absolutely must check out a sporting event, whether it’s a baseball game at Minute Maid Park, a basketball game at the Toyota Center, or a football game at the NRG. Let’s not forget about our vast array of restaurants. I couldn’t possibly name them all, but a few that I would definitely recommend would be Kulture, located in downtown Houston, specializing in southern comfort classics with a twist, and Ritual, located in the Heights, a farm to table restaurant with a nice cozy and casual atmosphere. Weather permitting, I also love to break out the bicycle and ride many of the trails Houston has to offer, such as Terry Hershey Park. Exploring downtown Houston or the Heights by bicycle is also on the list of “Must DOs”.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to all of my fellow women entrepreneurs. They wear many hats in the home while also working to make a positive impact in our communities. COVID-19 has temporarily impacted our efforts, and I am here to lend a few words of encouragement. This is just another hurdle to conquer, and as we manage through the day-by-day uncertainties, let’s remember “Why we started,” “Why we do what we do,” and know that “This too shall pass.”
