We had the good fortune of connecting with Tammie McKenzie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tammie, what do you attribute your success to?
I believe one of the most impactful factors behind my success is my moxie. I was told at an early age, I had a street-smart kind of spirit. You know, that intangible thing that you don’t learn in school and can’t get from reading a book. I have always been a dreamer and believe anything is possible. When I started my company, I simply combined moxie, the ability to overcome, and the dream of working for myself into my reality.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I had the idea of being a consultant for PEO clients since 2007, so on January 10, 2011, I took a leap of faith and decided to pursue my passion to work on my own as a PEO Broker. The first day of business was spent cold calling prospects to tell them about my new business and the service I could provide. 2 days, later I had my first client and 30 days later I was blessed with another. Thus the creation of PEO Broker LLC. It was amazing! Those two clients are still with me today and will always be special to me, in a unique way. Without them, I may not be here…I am truly grateful. Today I have clients from coast to coast. They range from small local companies to large multi-state employers and a variety of industries. Each and every client means more to me than revenue, they are all special people and they have trusted me to guide and advise them with employee benefits, risk services, and employer-related compliance. “In every case, my clients have realized large reductions in health insurance, workers compensation insurance, 401K and state Unemployment costs.” The impact my service offers not only saves the company money, but it also saves their employees and family members money on health care too. It is truly rewarding. I am grateful my programs and solutions offer affordable health insurance, especially during a time when premiums are at an all-time high. Being able to offer richer health plans at more affordable rates goes way beyond money. It impacts daily lives.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As my guest in our great diverse City of Houston, we would most definitely hit as many foreign food restaurants as possible. As a foodie myself, I believe Houston has some of the best food in the country. A few of my favorites places include dining and shopping in China Town then on to Vietnamese, Indian, and a must-have taste of our border for Mexican food. Lastly, if we have time, we would enjoy the unique spices of middle eastern food. All fabulous and yummy! Next, we would shop until we dropped. We would start with the smaller towns outside of the city for vintage finds, work our way to mid-town Houston for unique local merchants then end up on the beach in Galveston. One of my favorite places to spend a day or two. While in Galveston we would visit local shops, grab fresh seafood, and hop a ride or two at our pleasure pier amusement park. Visiting Galveston is one of my favorite easy to get to destinations. It’s easy to get to and full of fun and exciting things to do.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shout out goes to my late mother, Lonise Nellie Collins. Growing up, my mom worked 3 low paying jobs and raised 4 children on her own. She taught me to leave things better than I found them, be thankful for what I have, and not to listen when people put me down. These important lessons helped me overcome growing up in a low-income family and to believe overachievers don’t have to have a college education to be successful. And….. anything is possible.
