We had the good fortune of connecting with Tia Daugharty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started photography for a couple of different reasons. I always wanted something I could do that was “my thing”. I had thought about photography, but never took the plunge to see how to get started. In 2016 I had my final baby and decided we should get Christmas photos done by a photographer. The experience wasn’t what I expected and it left me wanting more. After the session I found myself visualizing myself capturing sweet memories for families, couples, and others. In 2017, I decided to jump in and bought my first DSLR camera. I joined many groups and bought courses so I could learn the art of photography. The following year I got more serious and finally had a little business of my own. Tia Daugharty Photos allows me to meet new people and capture those sweet memories.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart from others is my desire to build relationships as well as repeat clients. In business many times a client is forgotten after the transaction. I strive to be different in that area and would love to build lifetime relationships. It was not easy to get where I am today. If I am honest I am still working through fear and imposter syndrome. It was been great to keep pushing because it’s at my own pace and my clients have been pleased with their photographs.

I overcame the challenges by continuing to pour into myself with education and research. I have learned many lessons over the past couple of years. The biggest one is to have faith in myself and realizing we all start somewhere.

I want the world to know that I have a huge heart and the desire to serve others. I want them to know I am passionate about what I do and who I work with. I focus hugely on great customer service as that is an area that is near and dear to my heart. I am committed to making each experience what the client wants and exceed expectations if I can.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to The Heights area. It’s such a cute and cozy area with so much to see and tons of restaurants to choose from. We would sightsee in Downtown Houston and then head to The Heights. Once we were in that area we would visit Mico’s Hot Chicken for an amazing meal! They have super fresh food and good customer service. We would then visit a few garden/flower shops that I love down there. Joshua’s Native Plants and Garden is where we would spend some time and also Wabash Feed and Garden store. We would end the night at the Travelers Table for dinner and drinks.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Hopefully, it is okay to list two people who were super supportive as I decided to get started in photography. The first person who knew I wanted to explore being a photographer was my super close friend Chrissy. She too had just recently started and I encouraged her so much because she had so much drive and talent. I then expressed to her that I too wanted to explore a path in photography. She wholeheartedly started encouraging me and guiding me. She said let’s learn together. We did! She to this day is a huge supporter of my business and always encourages me even though I may not believe in myself at all times.

My husband would be my 2nd supporter with love. As I was deciding photography was something I wanted to do he was right behind me encouraging. I expressed to him that I may even need his help (because I am in a wheelchair) for certain shots/angles. He said just teach me as you learn and I will do whatever it takes to help you grow at whatever pace you would like. I would not be where I am today without those 2 and God!

Entrepreneurship requires support because it can be a tough road learning so much and navigating the unknown.
