We had the good fortune of connecting with Vanessa Irino and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Vanessa, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Items that some may otherwise consider as junk or trash, can then be made into enjoyable display and wearable works of art. Antique shops are my favorite places to locate random items I feel I can be creative with.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My business is called Vantique I mixed my name and antique together. My favorite pastime growing up was antiquing and still enjoy it to this day. At a young age I always loved mixing different items together and making some cool works of art or jewelry. As I grew up I figured out a way to incorporate my love for antiques and antique shopping into making works of art and also accessories. Random items, random pieces of broken parts of items and jewelry pieces that people want to toss and throw away and think it is trash or junk I’m able to create new life into them. I’m always proud of my work when I see somebody’s eyes light up and tell me that they are so amazed of what I made with what items I made it with. I work with all types of media from doll parts crystal’s scrabble tiles cameos broken watch pieces and anything antique looking especially victorian style which is my favorite way to dress. All these years I have gone through many phases in life trying to find out who I was what my niche was what my style was and I finally got it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well San Antonio has its basics such as the river walk and the Alamo in which a lot of people have already visited once or twice before. Naturally if a friends never been here and they are interested in seeing those places I don’t mind taking them and look at it myself again for like the hundredth time. I only wish we had more nice historical places such as the Gunter house because I myself love beautiful gardens and victorian houses. San Antonio was rich with lots of Mexican culture around here. It is what I grew up with however it’s not what I feel so close to inside.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
All my loving friends and family who’ve never given up on me! All the encouragement, love and support has kept me going! Most especially my husband and my son! Shoutout to my grandfather who always said, Never give up! And who’s creativity I take after!
