We had the good fortune of connecting with Veloney Jack-Cross and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Veloney, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
P.B.C. Tax & Financial Services Inc. was founded with a simple but powerful mission: to empower individuals, families, and entrepreneurs through financial knowledge and trusted guidance.

Our founder, Veloney “Puma” Jack-Cross, started P.B.C. after recognizing a major gap in financial education within many communities. Too often, individuals felt overwhelmed by taxes, confused about starting a business, or unsure how to build financial stability. Many people had dreams of entrepreneurship and financial independence but lacked access to reliable information and professional support.

Puma believed there had to be a better way.

With a passion for helping others succeed, she created P.B.C. Tax & Financial Services to be more than just a tax office. Her vision was to build a company where people could come not only to file their taxes, but also to learn, grow, and gain the confidence needed to take control of their financial future.

Through P.B.C., Puma works with individuals, small business owners, and aspiring entrepreneurs by providing services such as:

• Professional tax preparation
• Business creation and consulting
• Bookkeeping and financial organization
• Credit and financial literacy education
• IRS assistance and compliance guidance

Her goal has always been to make financial services accessible, understandable, and empowering for everyone.

Today, P.B.C. Tax & Financial Services continues to grow as a trusted resource for clients seeking reliable financial guidance. Puma remains committed to her mission of protecting legacies, building businesses, and strengthening communities through financial empowerment.

At P.B.C., we believe that when people understand their finances, they gain the power to change their future.

What should our readers know about your business?
P.B.C. Tax & Financial Services Inc. was created to be more than just a place where people file their taxes once a year. From the beginning, my vision was to build a business that helps individuals, families, and entrepreneurs truly understand their finances and take control of their future. Many people feel overwhelmed when it comes to taxes, credit, or starting a business. My goal has always been to simplify those processes and empower people with the knowledge they need to move forward with confidence.

What sets P.B.C. apart is that we focus on education and empowerment, not just transactions. Of course we provide professional tax preparation and financial services, but we also take time to educate our clients. Whether someone wants to start a business, improve their credit, or organize their finances, we walk them through the process so they understand what they’re doing and why it matters. When people understand their finances, they gain the power to build stability and generational wealth.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the trust our clients place in us. Many of our clients come through referrals, and a lot of them stay with us year after year. That tells me we’re doing something right. Seeing people grow—from starting with a simple tax return to eventually opening their own business or improving their financial situation—is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

The journey to building P.B.C. was not easy. Like many entrepreneurs, I faced moments of uncertainty, long hours, and the pressure of building something from the ground up. Starting a business requires resilience because things don’t always go according to plan. There were times when I had to learn new systems, navigate regulations, and figure out how to balance business responsibilities with personal life. But each challenge became an opportunity to learn and grow.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of consistency and perseverance. Success doesn’t happen overnight. It comes from showing up every day, continuing to learn, and staying committed to your vision even when things get difficult. I’ve also learned that relationships matter. Building genuine connections with clients and the community is what sustains a business long-term.

What I want people to know about me and my brand is that everything I do is rooted in service and impact. P.B.C. Tax & Financial Services isn’t just about numbers—it’s about helping people build better futures. Whether that means helping someone resolve a tax issue, guiding an entrepreneur through starting their first business, or educating families about financial literacy, my mission is to create opportunities and strengthen the community.

At the end of the day, my story is about perseverance, purpose, and empowerment. I want people to see that with determination, knowledge, and the willingness to help others, it’s possible to build something meaningful that not only supports your own success but also uplifts the people around you.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting for a week, I’d want them to experience Houston the way I do—through food, culture, community, and Caribbean vibes. Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the country, and that diversity is what makes it such an exciting place to explore.

We’d start the week downtown at Discovery Green, which is always lively and full of energy. There’s often live music, art installations, and community events happening there, so it’s the perfect place to walk around and soak in the atmosphere of the city.

Since I’m Caribbean, food would definitely be one of the highlights of the trip. Houston has an incredible Caribbean food scene, and I’d make sure my friend experienced some of the authentic flavors that remind me of home. One stop would definitely be Cool Runnings Jamaican Grill for amazing jerk chicken, rice and peas, and plantains. I’d also take them to Ahia’s Roti Shop, which is known for its incredible roti and Trinidadian-style Caribbean dishes. Spots like that really show how strong and vibrant the Caribbean community is here in Houston.

Midweek we’d take a trip to Space Center Houston, because it’s one of the most unique attractions Texas has to offer. Seeing the history of space exploration up close is something people from all over the world come to experience.

I would definitely make sure they experienced the best mix of Houston’s culture and Baytown. One stop I would add to the itinerary is grabbing some great Texas BBQ from Caribbean-owned Madan’s BBQ. It’s the perfect blend of bold Texas barbecue flavors with a touch of Caribbean influence, and it’s the kind of spot that really represents the diverse food culture in the area.

After enjoying some amazing BBQ, we would head over to Baytown, where I live and work. Of course, I’d want them to experience one of my favorite places to unwind—the Baytown Nature Center. The beautiful views of the water, the wildlife, and the peaceful walking trails make it the perfect escape from the busy city. It’s a place where you can relax, take in nature, and just enjoy the calm atmosphere while watching birds and boats along the bay.

That combination of great food and peaceful scenery would give my friend a true taste of both Houston’s culture and the natural beauty of Baytown.

One thing I’d really want them to experience is the Caribbean culture and community events that happen in Houston. Events like Caribbean Link-ups and Houston CaribFest bring together food, music, dancing, and culture from across the Caribbean diaspora. The energy at those events reminds me so much of home.

I’m also very proud to be a co-partner of the Caribbean Craft Market, which brings Caribbean entrepreneurs, artists, and food vendors together to celebrate our culture and support small businesses. It’s something I’m really passionate about because it creates opportunities for Caribbean creatives and entrepreneurs while sharing our traditions with the wider community.

Later in the week we’d head to The Kemah Boardwalk for great food, music, and beautiful sunset views over the water. And to wrap up the trip, we’d spend a day in Galveston enjoying the beach, fresh seafood, and the relaxed coastal atmosphere.

Houston is special to me because it allows me to embrace both my Caribbean heritage and my entrepreneurial journey. It’s a city full of culture, opportunity, and community, and that’s exactly what I would want any friend visiting to experience.

By the end of the week, they’d understand why Houston feels like home—it’s a place where different cultures thrive together and where you can truly build something meaningful.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
If I had to give a shoutout to someone who helped shape my journey, it would absolutely be my family, especially the strong women who came before me. They taught me resilience, hard work, and the importance of standing on your own two feet. Watching how they navigated life with strength and determination planted the seed in me that I could build something meaningful of my own.

One person who deserves special recognition is my grandmother, Alexandrina Jack. She was a woman whose heart for helping others left a lasting impression on me. Her kindness and generosity taught me that success should never just be about personal achievement—it should also be about uplifting others. That legacy continues to guide me today and even inspired the name of my nonprofit, Alexandrina’s Giving Heart, which was created to honor her spirit of giving.

I would also like to acknowledge some of the incredible people who have been part of my journey and continue to inspire the work I do in the community. I am grateful for my business partners and family who are the founders and owners of I Love Being Caribbean, Stephan Anderson and Sherry Bernard, whose passion for celebrating Caribbean culture and community has been a constant source of inspiration. I would also like to recognize Nicholl Hunte, the Founder and Owner of the Caribbean Women Expo, for creating spaces that uplift and empower Caribbean women entrepreneurs and professionals.

In addition, I want to acknowledge the mentors, educators, and business professionals who have shared their knowledge and guidance with me along the way. Entrepreneurship can be a challenging journey, and there were moments when advice, encouragement, or even a simple conversation helped me push forward. Those experiences reminded me that while entrepreneurship requires courage, determination, and independence, none of us truly succeed alone. The support, wisdom, and community around us play an important role in helping us grow and continue making an impact.
And of course, I have to recognize my community and clients. The people who trust me with their businesses, finances, and goals are a huge part of my story. Their support is what allows P.B.C. Tax & Financial Services Inc. to grow and continue serving others. Every client represents a relationship, a dream, or a family working toward a better future, and being a part of that process is something I never take for granted.

At the end of the day, my journey isn’t just about building a business. It’s about building opportunities, creating impact, and continuing a legacy of empowerment and service. And that legacy exists because of the people who believed in me, supported me, and helped shape the person I am today.
