Meet Terell Green | Director & Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Terell Green and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Terell, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Balance can be difficult at times because I have so many projects, jobs, and businesses under my belt, till there are times when I don’t get a mental break. I have a regular job as an Office Coordinator working for Bristow Helicopters, I shop and deliver groceries to people’s homes, and I am the business owner of Banister and Berek B&B. I’m also heavily involved in my mom’s life regarding her health and well-being, therefore my mind is constantly busy. I try to balance it all out, but it’s difficult at times. For example, my friends are always wanting to travel, go out to eat, party, etc, but I don’t have the time. I do try to see them at least once a month.

Trying to be successful and remain successful is a constant everyday struggle. Keep in mind that I’m also a director, producer, screenplay writer, actor, and photographer, therefore there are no days off. Yes, I dabble in a number of things. I enjoy having skills and education to venture into many things, but it can be overwhelming. So trying to balance out my work life is a joke. I keep telling myself that one day all my hard work is going to pay off and I’ll be able to fly my best friends on a surprise trip to Italy to make up for all the times I wasn’t able to spend time with them.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Everything starts with a vision. For me, being an entertainer was what I enjoyed doing. As a kid/teen I would dance to all of Janet Jackson songs. In my head I wanted to be the next Janet Jackson. So, my first passion for the arts was being a dancer. As I approached my high school years, I took an interest in acting, so I took a chorus in drama/theater, but I didn’t stop there. I began diving in videography. As I approached my 30’s, I began to realize that I’m getting older and I’m not happy. Not being happy in life for as success, career, money, and direction. I needed a change, a change that would greatly take my life in a whole other direction. I began getting more involved with dancing, acting, producing, directing, photography, and although I enjoy those things. It wasn’t taking off for me as fast as I would’ve liked. In my 40’s, I developed the clothing brand, “Banister and Berek.” Banister and Berek is where I’m currently in my life. I said all of that to say that I’ve always been mentally and professionally busy. Let me just say that nothing comes easy and Rome wasn’t built in one day. You must be patient and know that slow and steady wins the race. It was never about me competing with anyone to make it big or be famous. It was always me competing with me. I can sit here and say that everything is easy, I’m highly successful, I’m rich, I’m living the high life and I’d be lying. Challenges are constantly being met which keeps me busy 365 days a year. There are no off days, my grind keeps me busy.  

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Favorite spots in the city well let’s see: Cyclone Anaya Tex-Mex Restaurant in Midtown on Gray Street (my friends love going there literally every Friday for Happy Hour). Their margaritas are the best. The Burger Joint in Montrose is a nice little vibe. It’s an outdoor space to order food and sit outside to eat. Seasons 52 restaurant in the City Centre Outlet Mall. I had the pleasure of eating at Seasons 52 restaurant for my 45th birthday and the food was amazing. Beautiful restaurant, quiet, and great service. In the gay district (Montrose), a nice spot I like to visit is Houston Eagle. There is a dance floor on the first floor that plays old school disco and 80’s hits. Being a kid from the 80’s I enjoy the 80 hits that the club provides. Upstairs is a totally different vibe that plays house music and younger crowd. The outside patio areas are nice, clean, and presentable to chill.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a few people I can give credit to and recognize for their support. My two best friends are Sam Young and J’monte Hooey. I can honestly say that they’ve been there for me no matter what project I’m working on. If I’m producing a stage play and I need them, they are always willing and able to assist in any way. When I told them I was coming out with a clothing line, they went online and bought my clothes immediately. They wear my clothes and do not hesitate to tell people it’s Terell’s line. I appreciate that love and support. There has never been a time where my friends have discouraged me from achieving a goal.

My Aunt Debra believes in me more than I believed in myself. There were plenty of times when I held myself back from trying to make my dreams come true. Not my Aunt Debra, she believes I can do all things from dancing for Janet Jackson to being the next big Hollywood producer. It feels good knowing that a family member has that much faith in you.

Siblings’ love is so important. My sister Daphne has never missed a play that I have produced/directed. She lives in a different state and that doesn’t stop her from calling me to say, “Bruh Bruh, come get me. I want to come to your show.” Me being the big brother that I am. I will jump in my vehicle and drive to North Louisiana and get my biggest cheerleader.
