We had the good fortune of connecting with Johnny Muñoz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Well as an artist, the art came natural but as far as turning my art into a business, that was such a daunting task. However, as I get older, I finally realized it was now or never. With that mindset I was able to turn my ideas on how I would present myself and be perceived as an artist into a business, complete with official email, domain and shop. I created and posted my first products within my first 2 months of laying down the foundations of the business and just that in itself has been my proudest accomplishment. What sets me apart from most traditional business models is that I am able to use my creativity to create and put out art I love to do and continuously evolve through artistic maturity. In a sense I have a lot of freedom to play with ideas and products and serve a variety of niches in different ways, whether a mural, logo, or commissions which naturally are their own income streams. This was not easy to say the least and after getting laid off at the beginning of 2023, my back was against the wall but it was also an opportunity to really see if I can do what I’ve been saying I had want to do for a long time. So I want the world to know that OG Johnny is fighter, cancer survivor, who has seen the darkness and decided to create and bring light to the world for those struggling to find that light, that joy, or spark of inspiration.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a local and native resident of Austin, Tx, the possibilities can be dialed down to even the most nuance of preferences. But being that I’m a Texas boy thru and thru, we are getting up and going to grab breakfast tacos from one of the many delicious food trucks around town and enjoying the early evening at Cosmic coffee. As lunch time comes around, I’d insist for wings and a beer at one of my favorite bars in town, Jackalope; the wings are my favorite. After, we’d go for a nice walk through Austin’s most notable park, Zilker Park. Here we’d walk off the wings and follow it with an ice cream or float at Sandy’s. The remaining of the night, dinner at Patrizis for fantastic pasta and a live band, and end the night dancing it off on East 6th bars and wobbling to taco trucks because we think more food is a good idea.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The group I would like to dedicate my Shoutout to is a pretty large group and I honestly could not name them all by name but they are all very special to me and I love them very much. This group is comprised of all of my immediate family, friends, and those who I may not see everyday, or every year, or if ever, but supported me during my battle with cancer and who continue to support me with my art. I love these people very much and every, hug, message, call, donation, ride, and meal helped me overcome a hardship and deserve a lot of credit for where and who I am today.
