We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrew Paul Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Andrew, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Narrative storytelling and music always excited me. My first project was a graphic novel that I only completed a few pages of. My attempts at illustration didn’t yield good results, so I started thinking about cameras and filmmaking.
When I was 16, I gave up playing trumpet in band class so I could switch to a film/video elective. That semester I stayed up all night one night to draft my first short script, a WWII-era political drama called “Dependence.” It gave me an electric feeling that was completely new, and I still feel it to this day when I write.
I’ve kept screenwriting and songwriting because it helps me interpret reality, process more complex emotions, and think about life in new ways. I cherish making memories with friends on film sets and sharing the end results with my community. I like most of my years to include a sense of achievement that comes from building a colorful catalogue of film and music.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
After years of narrative filmmaking and songwriting, I’ve finally started getting more serious about music videos. It’s been fun to combine my training in film, theatre and music. My video “Eaten” is my flashiest project to date, and I’m excited to follow it up with another video this year that employs current interests in maximalism, absurdity, and surrealism.
Production is a muscle that I’ve worked regularly for thirteen years. I get better and better at stretching a dollar and finding ways to more efficiently produce independent film work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you come see me in Logan Square, Chicago, we’re going to the movies, we’re going to the bar Quality Time, we’re eating at BiXi, Namaste (or Chiya Chai), Mi Tocaya, and Mr. E’s for hot dogs.
If we need to get in a car, it’ll probably be for a trip to the Music Box Theater.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
It’s hard to single out a person or group because I’ve worked with over five-hundred people to make my films. My projects wouldn’t exist without those cast and crew members. Here’s to them.
