We had the good fortune of connecting with Alan Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alan, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I began my artistic journey as a faux finisher and painter two decades ago. However, my true calling as a painter emerged in 2007 when I was diagnosed with B cell lymphoma and underwent cancer treatments. As a kid, I always had a passion for drawing and creating art. During one of my treatments in the hospital, on my 25th birthday, my family and friends gifted me with art supplies, which sparked my love for painting. Fortunately, in 2008, I was declared cancer-free, and since then, my art has steadily grown and evolved into what it is today.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When I was a kid, I always knew that I wanted to be an entrepreneur once I started making money by mowing lawns. I even realized early on that college wasn’t going to be my path, although I did attend briefly for business studies. As a kid, I would always dream up business plans in my head, and this habit continued into my young adult years.
As a public artist, one of the things I love about my work is the positive impact it has on the community. Art adds value, brings life, encourages, inspires, and overall uplifts morale in the community. My goal has always been to be a light in this dark world, to my community, and wherever I have the opportunity to create art.
I used to work to live, now I live to work. This is a tough one for me, overall I love to be working, using my hands, and creating as an artist does. I think now as I’ve hit my early 40’s it’s not about work work work, but rather more living as each day comes. Working on the days that work needs to get done, but also learning to live life on the days that don’t require work.
I have always believed that taking a risk simply means taking the first step. In the world of art, there will always be people who love and appreciate your work, but there will also be those who don’t. You will receive both positive and negative comments. However, if your clients are happy with what you create, then taking that risk is always worth it in the end.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love all the amazing places and experiences that Houston has to offer. One of my favorite spots for Mexican food is Ninfas – you must try the fajitas! A trip to the Galleria Mall for all your shopping needs is also a great experience. My wife really loves Smither Park for its awesome eclectic art. Along with the Sawyer Yards Art District, I used to have a studio there back in the day, and it was great! You can’t go wrong with a good cup of coffee from The Cuban Cafe in my hometown of Deer Park to start or finish your day!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Of course! Firstly, my family has been an immense source of support and motivation for me. They have always believed in me and encouraged me to aim higher and achieve greater things. Their unwavering faith in my abilities has been a driving force behind my success. Lastly, I want to give a huge shoutout to my wife, Ariana, who faithfully takes care of all the behind-the-scenes work for our business. She manages emails, runs errands, and handles our social media, keeping me on track and organized!
