We had the good fortune of connecting with Sandeep Sulhan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sandeep, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Since childhood, music has been everything to me. I live and breathe music. In high school when I got into music (originally starting as a dhol player) it changed my life. Being bullied growing up, lack of self esteem, confidence, once I got into music, it changed the game for me and how people looked at me. After becoming a dhol player and retiring from it about 12 years ago, I am now a full time DJ, Music Producer, MC, and Radio Host.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I was given great advice from a good friend of mine, to be a different artist than others. If you want to be noticed or seen, then you need to things differently than other artists. I took that advice, and till today I still believe in it.
I have been an artist for 25 years now, and I strongly believe in learning every single day. No matter how much experience you have, or how big your name is you should perform like a boss, and learn like a student everyday. I have no regrets but I still feel like there’s always room for improvement.
There’s always challenges you face in this journey. When I became a full time DJ, I had dreams of performing at different clubs, lounges, but I never got the opportunity. I would ask other DJs to give me a chance to spin, but it rarely happened. If I did get an opportunity at a event, those events were flops with a no show crowd. You have to look out for yourself, it’s sad but it’s also true, you have to work hard in building a brand for yourself.
Not to sound arrogant, but now I have clubs/lounges/private events that reach out to me to perform, which is a blessing, but at the same time like I said there’s always room for improvement. You will always face challenges along the way, but you should never give up, no matter what.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family has been my biggest support system, and my friends who are dear to me.
My father has allowed me to purse my music career, and live my dreams. His guidance, mentorship is why I am what I am. My brothers give me a lot of support.
When you grow into this line of work, you know who your true friends are, and who supported you even during the tough times. I keep myself surrounded with positive people and people who push me to be bigger and better.
My older brother Sid inspired me to get into music, he was in the marching band in high school on the drum line, and I was super inspired, and dreamed of performing on different platforms some day.
I would also like to thank Mike Khan and Tariq Khan from Radio Dabang 99.5fm, the #1 Bollywood station in Houston. I have a weekday show from 10am-1pm CST on this station thanks to these great gentlemen.
Last but not at least, my biggest supporter and #1 fan is my grandma, she is 90 years old, but she never misses a radio show of mine, and she’s always giving me feedback. every single day.
