We had the good fortune of connecting with Captain Dwayne Green and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Captain Dwayne, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The inspiration behind launching Totally Texas Outdoors LLC was to establish a welcoming retreat where families and friends could partake in exceptional whitetail deer hunting, duck hunting, spring turkey hunting, and premier Gulf Coast fishing. Our aim is to provide an inclusive environment that is affordable for everyday individuals who seek to immerse themselves in the outdoors without the burdensome expenses typically associated with such adventures. We strive to create lasting connections that extend far beyond the time spent in the field or out on the water with us.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The journey of realizing my dream with Totally Texas Outdoors LLC involved various iterations, not all of which were successful. However, each version taught me valuable lessons, enabling me to grow personally and professionally. Through these experiences, I gained insight into what truly matters to me, as well as to those around me and our clients. Our goal is to create lasting memories that our clients will cherish for a lifetime, transforming them into cherished friends and family. While not everyone may share the same vision for your dreams, navigating challenges in both business and personal life, including inevitable setbacks and breakups, is crucial. How one handles these obstacles and rebounds to move forward ultimately determines success or failure. I do not view setbacks as failures but rather as opportunities to pave the way for future success.
One of the most important lessons I have learned is the significance of the people with whom you surround yourself. It is crucial to be open and honest in all your endeavors. When you find individuals who share your passion for the outdoors and align with your vision, it is essential to hold onto them. I am fortunate to have some incredible individuals without whom I could not have made Totally Texas Outdoors a reality. My childhood friend and lifelong best friend, Deats Burbank, has been instrumental in stepping up and assisting in guiding and maintaining our operations in North Texas. Keegan Lucas, who was the host of our podcast / radio show, has played a pivotal role in generating buzz nationwide and attracting individuals to Totally Texas Outdoors. Additionally, Captain River Ryman has gone above and beyond in ensuring the safety and enjoyment of our clients in our fishing business on the Gulf Coast, regardless of their experience level on the water. His dedication and support have been invaluable to our success.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Houston and its surrounding areas offer a plethora of fantastic dining and recreational options, making it challenging to choose just one favorite spot. When hosting friends, we enjoy dining at Papa Brothers Steakhouse in Houston for its delicious food and excellent service. Another favorite dining spot is the Pump House in Victoria, Texas, and Larry’s Original Mexican Restaurant in Richmond, Texas, both known for their fantastic cuisine and top-notch service. A visit to the beach is a must, with Matagorda Bay offering the perfect setting for casting a line or simply enjoying the beauty of the bay.
Exploring North Texas, particularly Nocona, Texas, is always a delight. The area boasts numerous attractions, including wineries, a brewing company, a boot company, and a glove company, all adding to the charm of the region. For a taste of authentic Texas country music, we love visiting Saint Joe’s and Red River Station. Additionally, the Hill Country, with its picturesque Guadalupe and Frio rivers, remains a favorite summertime destination for us to unwind and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe a debt of gratitude to my family, particularly my parents, grandparents, and brothers, for their unwavering support and encouragement throughout my life. It is with my father and grandfather that I first developed my passion for hunting, and my brothers have become lifelong hunting companions, a tradition that we proudly continue to this day, even 50 years since we first started.
I am also incredibly grateful to my fiancé, Denise Branton, for her unwavering emotional support and unwavering belief in me, even during the most challenging moments of pursuing my dream. Her encouragement and dedication have been instrumental in allowing me to persevere and remain focused, as she has stood by my side, working tirelessly alongside me every step of the way.
I am also indebted to Brandon Irwin for introducing me to his parents, Marty and Stacy Irwin. Their unwavering belief in my dream in North Texas and their willingness to partner with me have been instrumental in providing our hunting guests with the opportunity to stay in one of the most stunning locations in North Texas, right on Lake Nocona. Their support and faith in our venture have played a significant role in the remarkable growth of our business.
I am immensely grateful to Garret Combs and the entire Combs family for their generosity in allowing me the privilege of hunting on their magnificent property with our clients. Garret is not just a valued business partner but also a dear friend, and I am confident that our partnership and friendship will continue to flourish over the next decade.
