We had the good fortune of connecting with Meika Powells and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Meika, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
“No days off”. I would have to strongly disagree with, although I understand its intent we are human, not machines. A rest day, or self care day is just as important as being “booked and busy”. Speaking for myself, I work better when I’m well rested, stress free, and decluttered mentally. A day off every so often is vital in running a business and that is something you don’t always hear.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
MoveLikeMeika LLC is a dance business. We specialize in movement and offer a wide variety of dance classes to our clients. Our classes include hip-hop, Zumba, dance fitness, jazz, creative movement and so much more. We offer a variety of levels;beginners, intermediate, and advance. Here at M.L.M. LLC we want everyone to feel welcomed and comfortable in the classes they participate in. MoveLikeMeika LLC started at the end of 2020 as the global pandemic was coming to an end. As the entire world was on lockdown I found myself falling into a depression. I begin to ask myself “what am I doing with my life”, “what’s my purpose”. I’ve always loved dance since I was 7 years old. I’ve taken many classes and trained with some amazing people but once Covid 19 struck and no one was having classes I found myself lost. As I was at my lowest I stumbled across a quote on Instagram that read “Tip Toe if you must, but take the first step.” It was as if Bob Proctor made that post specifically for me. Immediately, my mind began to race. What is the first step? What am I going to do? What is my purpose? I didn’t have an answer to any of these questions at the time. So to calm myself I played some music and started to dance around my apartment. Before I knew it 30 minutes had gone by and I was filled with joy. Nothing mattered when I was dancing and I could feel myself shaking off the depression I had been feeling. In that moment I knew that dance was the answer. I knew that it was time for me to take the first step and move like Meika. I believe in the power of dance because I’ve experienced it myself. That is something I want everyone to experience.
MoveLikeMeika LLC is more than a physical expression it is a mental liberation. Whatever negativity a client may be feeling gets overcome by rhythm, melody, and resonance.
A lesson I’ve learned is that those who are for me will come to me. When I first began I thought everyone I knew and called friend /family would show up and show out. That all “my people” would be faithful clients. It was later that I learned that they weren’t meant to be my clients and that would be ok. It was the people who started off as stranger who I can now saw are true MLM LLC supporters and faithful clients. Learning that all friends/family aren’t meant to be clients and all clients aren’t meant to be friends has helped me to meet people where they are and better protect my emotions and not mix up my personal feelings with business.
Finding resources and funding has been the hardest challenge for the business. I currently work full-time as a caregiver and nanny to not only take care of personal responsibilities but also help fund my MLM LLC visions and plans.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to first shoutout my older brother, Ronell Martin, who was my first dance partner, choreographer, and role model. If it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be the dancer I am today, I love you forever big brother.
A huge shout out to my God-mom/mentor, Adrienne Rowe, for literally reshaping my mind and teaching me about the power of thoughts.
I would like to thank my God-sister, Denisea Woodard Patterson, who has given me the best business and personal advice and continues to support my business.
My high school dance teacher, Dominique Baxter, who walked in grace, beauty, and class everyday! Once I entered her class I knew I wanted to continue my dance career and it was an honor to be her student.
My favorite author and life coach, Dr. Cindy Trimm, who’s books give me the spiritual knowledge and wisdom to persevere, prosper, and pursue my dreams.
To all of my family, friends and MoveLikeMeika LLC supporters/clients, I love you all dearly and I am grateful for you believing in me .
