We had the good fortune of connecting with Yashika Annang and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Yashika, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
My ultimate goal is to create seamless systems within Hair Affair that allow the business to thrive and grow without my direct involvement. I envision Hair Affair becoming a globally recognized household name and the #1 Hair Care Brand in the world. But more than just success, I want to make a real difference in the lives of others. I believe my purpose is to serve, and I plan to do that through empowering my team, creating opportunities, and supporting those in alignment with our mission. I want to build a company that not only excels in hair care but also leaves a lasting positive impact on the communities we touch.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Hair Affair was born out of a personal experience, my own struggle with postpartum hair loss. I knew I couldn’t be the only one facing this challenge, and I felt called to share the solution that worked for me with others who might be going through similar issues. I have always had a passion for helping others, and it is at the heart of everything we do at Hair Affair.
What sets my business apart is our commitment to offering premium hair care solutions that truly work. We use vegan, plant-based, and organic ingredients that nourish hair from root to tip, while also being environmentally conscious. Our customers don’t just get products—they get a solution that restores confidence and promotes healthy hair growth. This focus on quality and results, combined with my personal connection to the problem we’re solving, is what makes Hair Affair stand out.
Getting to where I am today has been far from easy. It required a *limitless* mindset and an unwavering belief that if I never give up, it has to work out eventually. I’ve always been a glass-half-full thinker, and that positive outlook has helped me push through challenges. Along the way, I’ve learned that mentorship is key. As the saying goes, *if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.* Seeking mentorship and learning from others has been crucial to my growth.
One of my proudest achievements is gaining the attention and investment of Goldman Sachs through their One Million Black Women Black In Business Program. Being part of that program was a turning point for me and my business—it validated my hard work and opened doors to even greater opportunities.
Ultimately, Hair Affair is more than just a business; it’s a mission. I want the world to know that our purpose goes beyond hair care. We aim to make a difference in the lives of others, whether through the confidence our products bring or through our commitment to giving back to the community. My journey has been full of challenges, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding. I’ve learned that with the right mindset, determination, and support, anything is possible.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I’m originally from Chicago and only relocated to Houston a couple of years ago, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring this amazing city and discovering some great spots that I’d love to share with my best friend.
We’d start the week off with a delicious brunch at *The Breakfast Klub*, a must-visit for anyone new to Houston. Afterward, we’d head to *Pur Noire*, a Black-owned winery for a relaxed wine tasting experience—an absolute gem in the city.
To cap off the evening, we’d hang out at *The Living Room*, an intimate lounge perfect for unwinding with good vibes and music.
The next day would be all about fun! We’d go bar hopping with *Trill on Wheels*, a Black-owned party bike company that takes you around to some of the best spots in Houston. For dinner, we’d go to *Prey*, a fantastic upscale restaurant that serves great food and has a wonderful atmosphere.
We’d end the night with something a bit more interactive, maybe an escape room, or hit up an arcade or bowling alley for some friendly competition. Houston has plenty of spots for active fun, and I love to mix in a bit of excitement with the relaxation!
Houston has so much to offer, and even though I’m still exploring myself, these are some good spots I’ve come across so far.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a huge shoutout to my husband, Kevin. He is truly the reason I became a business owner. From day one, he believed in me and pushed me to take the leap and start Hair Affair. He even paid for the legal structure and provided the initial investment to get the business off the ground. His constant support and encouragement have been invaluable, and he continues to inspire me to think bigger and push harder. There’s no way I could do this without him—Hair Affair would not be what it is today without his guidance, love, and unwavering belief in me. He makes me believe that I can do absolutely anything.
