We had the good fortune of connecting with Rickale West and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rickale, how do you think about risk?
I appreciate this question for one primary reason, that is I have never been a big risk taker. I had always believed in playing it safe until i was a faced with two choices. It was either take the risk to go all in on this art business or wait around to see if I sink or swim without ever even trying. Risk taking for me at this point has been scary yet the most exciting time of my life. I have been able to share my art, and my message with many people because I decided to take a risk. The mission for this brand would be impossible to complete if it were not for stepping out on faith and taking the risk. As I know things will get even riskier, I hope to be able to impact so many more people with my work.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I consider my art unique because of the intention of each piece. Much of my work is the abstract telling of a story, feeling, emotion, or experience. I found the tag “Roxy Wuz Here” to be ideal for my brand name because I implant myself into each artwork also, I hope to leave a lasting reminder of the love, joy, and healing I wish to spread in this world. I have learned many things as I have grown as an artist not only about myself but also the impact I have the potential to make through my work. I am proud of the mission my brand represents which is ‘Curating joy through artistry’.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I like to go with the flow when it comes to outings but, if I had a friend in town for the week we would have to stop by the open art studios in Sawyers yards especially if it were second saturday. Maybe swing by Soul Food vegan. As far as just hanging out shedding some time we would likely head to a nearby lake or park.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out my wife and business partner Oyas Jackson-West. As an artist I can be very crucial on myself and my work, and there have been many days where she has been everything necessary to keep me and our brand going. I have to truly say that I would not have gotten as far as I have gotten without her hard work and effort.
