We had the good fortune of connecting with Azanett Bazan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Azanett, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
During the pandemic year, I visited my mother, and I realized that my mother was very lonely. I came home and told my daughter about it, and my daughter said, ‘Mom, why don’t you get her to bake the cookies that she makes every year for Christmas”.
What started as a hobby to pass the time turned into a viral hit. With the help of my daughter and mother, I began taking and fulfilling orders on social media, and we were met with rave reviews.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I believe what sets us apart from others is my fathers recipe which is over 60 years old and from the very heart of Mexico. In the beginning, it was a little challenging to sell our cookies, but people quickly realized we bake some of the best if not the best Hojarascas. It is very important to me to share the story behind the cookie recipe. I believe people appreciate the
story behind our cookies. I want everyone to feel like they knew my father.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First things first, There’s nothing like sipping a cup of freshly brewed coffee in my backyard.
Breakfast would definitely be at El Ranchito restaurant, a little mom-and-pop restaurant that has been in Pasadena for years!
You can’t beat Great Tex-Mex food from Johnny tamale.
Mama Mia’s for delicious pizza.
I love nature, so Holly Bay hike and bike trails are another must in Pasadena.
Galveston Island is another favorite of mine. The spot is a great place to grab a bit to eat and hang out by the water.
I have a new appreciation for small businesses, so I like to try to support vendor markets in our area.
Church is an absolute must, followed by a day filled with family time.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My father is my inspiration. My father was a baker in Mexico. My father came to the Houston area as a baker. He was looking for work. He worked hard to provide for our family. I recently found out that he finally had the opportunity to open his own bakery, but in the final stages, it fell through because he didn’t have enough money., leaving him no choice but to walk away from his dream. This was the moment I made it my personal goal to fulfill his dream, even if it’s with this one simple recipe.
