We had the good fortune of connecting with Billy D Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Billy D, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business is always wanting to create a product that wouldn’t just benefit myself, but benefit other individuals who also have the same goal as me. That goal is having and maintaining healthy hair. What really shocks me to this day is that I would have never thought I would start a business, but it was all in God’s timing!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The way my career started is basically networking in college. Very active individual in college by joining organizations, and also becoming a president of one. One of my organizations “Alpha Kappa Psi” honestly pushed my professionalism to the next level, and words can’t explain how thankful I am for them. The journey of going through this business fraternity was very tough, but like every one says it will all pay off in the end. The reason I brought up my business fraternity is because I have two very close fraternity brothers who were already in their career right after college. They both worked at Dell Inc., and I thought it would be great if I worked there also. I always thank these two guys for referring me to their manager, and basically getting me this job as a Senior Technician. I’ve been at Dell now for a year and six months, and it has been a fun journey working in the I.T world. Going back to college I was on the journey to graduate with a Marketing degree, and I did! Most people wonder how I graduated with a Marketing degree, but ended up in IT. The story above is the same story I tell everyone who asks about my new venture. I wanted to take on the challenge because I honestly think Marketing and I.T tie very well together. Of course I would love to make my way back to the Marketing field, but as of now I.T is what I am focused on. What sets me apart from others is that I motivate myself! Of course you see others doing something special, but they are not you, and some people find that hard to get. Since I’ve started my business a good amount of people have told me I inspired them to start a business, and I love hearing things like that, but it’s not about me inspiring you it’s about your time being now. Staying patient, and not being in a race with others is what got me to where I am today. I am most proud of selling over 300+ units of my ButterKream which is my number 1 seller. I wasn’t surprised or shocked at all, and the reason why is because I started off by doing pre-orders limiting to 25, and ended up with 62! That is when I knew people believed in me, and also my product. Another thing I am proud of is that I’ve shipped to 25 plus states, and I haven’t made it to 6 months yet! I want the world to know that this only the beginning, and I have much more on the way. I will always remain humble, but now I can honestly say my hair care products are the best in Texas. Being a 23 year old from Houston, Tx I just want to be known for having a product that benefits all hair types, and once you join the family you won’t be disappointed!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My best friend is visiting me for the first time, and I am a person to plan activities ahead of time. First, I would take them to a popular spot in Austin called Mount Bonnell a very popular tourist destination, but also a place to go hiking. It gets pretty hot in Texas, so we would be there 1 hour max! Now going to eat that is super easy because everyone loves to eat, but people want to go somewhere they’ve never been. I am taking my best friend to a place called “Tumble 22” the best fried chicken I’ve ever had in my life! This place also has drink, but I wouldn’t get any here since that is not in the plans. The next spot we would go is called “Paradise on Ice” the best daquiris you will ever have. I’ve been there plenty of times, so I know exactly what drink to get. Lastly, to hang out we are going to a very high class place called “The Domain” where there is a outside mall, and a bunch of bars, etc. That’s a pretty long agenda right there, but I promise my best friend would enjoy every single bit of it!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The only person who I can honestly shout out is my significant other “Ashley Caprice Eaton”. The reason she is the only individual who deserves a shoutout is because she is the only one who knew I had plans to start “Protekt Your Krown”. Huge shout out to her because at the end of day she wouldn’t sugar coat anything, and would tell me what was right or wrong.
