We had the good fortune of connecting with Brian Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brian, what do you attribute your success to?
I think part of our success at MGA is that we let talent speak for itself and we give everyone on the team the opportunity to thrive at their level. Most accounting firms have very structured hierarchy where you work for a few years then you are a senior, then you work for a few more and get promoted to supervisor, a few more to manager, etc. At MGA we really let people move at their own pace. Some of our team members rise through the ranks very quickly not on a predetermined time frame but on their ability. Some get to a particular level of attainment and find that is where they are happy so we let them stay there and be productive and happy. I think is very enticing for our team, they find that we advance based on ability and not by time served. I also think the success of our brand lies in our personalities. We are real people with real relationships with our clients. We don’t hide behind desks and wear ties and dresses like most CPAs. We give clients honest and real advice based on our experiences. Our clients take comfort in calling us for advice and know we will answer the phone and give them the help they need without all the hassle. We really strive to make the complex simple for our clients.
What should our readers know about your business?
We are a full service accounting and consulting firm recently relocated to the Heights. We are not your typical accounting firm! We hope that we make that obvious from first glance at our website (www.mgallp.com). Google the top 10 accounting firms in Houston and you will see a bunch of stale and boring CPAs in suits gracing their site. Our site is fresh and real and shows us for who we are. Every single team member is listed on our site and it shows something special about them. It doesn’t just list our partners or management team. We are way more than that. We don’t office in a boring building in Greenway Plaza or Downtown but are the original tenant in a creative development in the heights www.themkt.com. Everything about how we are and what we are is different from our competition. We still do a lot of the same work that you would find in an accounting firm but we just try to humanize and make it simple for our clients to understand. The tax and accounting rules get more complex each year and trying to understand the noise and the opportunities is sometimes hard to get to. We try to break it down for clients where they know exactly how we can help them keep more of what they are making and accomplish whatever financial goals they set out for themselves. The lessons we have learned along the way really point to who we are able to help the most. We have really realized that our ideal client is the entrepreneur. It is the client that is creating their own business and expanding and trying to do more. Our ideal client is one that has in excess of $5m in gross business revenue. We truly find that once clients hit that level of activity, their needs are more inline with our expertise. We love to work with clients that value what we do and aren’t looking for the cheapest tax return. I realized long ago that you get exactly what you pay for in life. We find that there are lots of prospects that reach out to MGA that we truly can’t add value to and we would be more expensive for their basic needs than other smaller firms. We find that by doing the right thing and helping those prospects find firms that fit their needs vs selling them something they don’t we are helping business owners at all levels. It is important at MGA that our staff fit our model and culture and that our clients do as well. Those go hand in hand.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If someone were coming in town I’d definitely show them around the Heights and the Memorial Park/Buffalo Bayou area. The redevelopment of this part of town is truly awesome, and the flavor it brings to our city is pretty special. Food is also very important as a Houstonian. The variety we have is pretty special thanks to our diverse city. I love so many of the Vietnamese restaurants we have and you can’t go wrong with our Tex Mex. It would be hard to pick just one as I truly have so many favorites. Below are a few of the go to’s for me. Vietnamese – Huynh in Eado Tex Mex – Lupe Tortilla, El Tiempo, Pappasitos Cajun – Orleans Seafood Kitchen Chinese – Mala Sichuan Italian – Original Carrabbas on Kirby Eclectic – State of Grace, Squabble, Nancy’s Hustle I’m also a huge fan of our local music scene. I love going to concerts at House of Blues, White Oak Music Hall’s lawn and the Heights Theatre. I think I would definitely check the concert list to see what options we have.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout goes to my team. My job is to lead our organization and develop relationships with people that can become clients that we can help. My team has the hard task of making everything I promise to our clients become a reality. The fine details of what we do require strategy, time and know how. My team makes that process look seamless. Sometimes we find real messes (I mean opportunities) for our clients and they take significant effort to make happen. My team does it with a smile and the accuracy. Without my team, everything I tell clients we can do for them doesn’t happen. We do truly operate as a team and everyone pulls for one another. It’s actually pretty special around here. I think if you look at the tenure of our team, you will see that they find something special about what we do too. We have a number of boomerangs as well at MGA. That’s what we call our players that think the grass might be greener but end up coming back because they realize it isn’t. Those make me the happiest. It shows me and those that are here that there is something special about MGA.
