We had the good fortune of connecting with Charles Helton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Charles, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
During the mid 80’s, my father was notified that he would be laid off at the job he had for 10 years. Luckily, he was able to find a job within the company that just happened to open up a month later. But, I remember the tension of maybe having to move, all because someone else deemed it so. The idea of having to pull up stakes, and move your family, all due to the actions of other people, seemed like a bad situation. I vowed not to live my life like that – I wanted to be in control of my life. And, I like the idea of being my own boss and setting all of the rules too.
What should our readers know about your business?
Charles Todd Helton Architect, Inc. is a full service Architectural firm, with Texas offices in Houston/The Woodlands, Austin, San Antonio & Dallas/Fort Worth. We specialize in residential Architecture – designing new homes and doing remodels and additions for families to enjoy for more than 18 years now. The key is listening to, and helping clients, in order to design the exact home that they desire. Architecture is the creation of buildings and spaces that are both artistically and logically thought out, a sort of balancing act between the right and left brain. I strive not to create in a certain style, but to let the Architecture be what it needs to be. Each building has a unique set of parameters and circumstances which should be reflected in the buildings design. Context is equally important, there are always existing external forces that cannot responsibly be ignored. Just as important, the Architectural process should be an enjoyable experience. I strive to build good relationships with all of my clients. I find that the best way to satisfy design needs is to learn as much as I can about my clients.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It depends on the time of year. Here are a few of my favorites: Astros baseball game – best team in town, NASA Space Center Houston – a must for out of towners, The Houston Rodeo BBQ Cook-off – awesome eats, drinks and dancing, the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships – I am a big tennis fan, and for places to eat: Corkscrew BBQ, Carrabba’s Italian, The Olive Oil Greek food, and many of our million Mexican restaurants!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to thank my Parents, Charles and Joan Helton, as well as my wife, Stephanie Helton, for all of the encouragement and support throughout the years!
