We had the good fortune of connecting with Chef DeeDee Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chef DeeDee, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to create an atmosphere for adults and children to come and enjoy cooking, to learn fun, exciting & approachable meals with a twist! I have always dreamed of teaching people how to cook. I figured a cooking class studio would be a great way to do it. I have learned so much through this process. My studio isn’t just for the people who have no idea how to navigate in a kitchen but for the awesome home cooks that just want to add some new recipes to their repertoire and have fun doing it! The cooking classes at Cooking With A Twist are for all cooking types and our classes are designed for kids & adults to enjoy cooking new recipes!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Southern Cooking Girl Creations Incorporated is my main brand that houses my other businesses. My first love is my catering business which started in Montgomery, Alabama in 1999. I moved to Houston in 2001 and catered my first wedding in 2002. Since then I have created a first class clientele & my catering business is thriving! My Award Winning Red Velvet Waffles were created in my home kitchen for a Sunday Brunch I opened in 2013! The Sunday Brunch Cafe wasn’t successful but those waffles were lol! Even today we sell our ready made waffle batter in 4 sizes! It is a very popular brand here in Houston and also in my home town of Montgomery Alabama. My most popular brand is my cooking class studio, Cooking With A Twist! A hands-on, interactive & BYOB cooking class for adults & kids! I think our customer service & our ability to offer a service or brand that people like is what sets us apart from others. I am most proud that all of my business are successful & thriving. I am excited about our growth & expansion, all in God’s timing of course but we are working diligently until those doors open! I think creativity & just being fearless is what got me where I am today! I am a faith walker! I trust God’s will & timing for my life & I do not let the thief of comparison blur my vision! I stay focused on not only what God has for me but I try to be a good steward over what He has already blessed me with. Of course it hasn’t always been easy. I have had many obstacles along the way but God always has a ram in the bush! He always provides a way to keep moving through those obstacles. With every experience there is a lesson to be learned. I have definitely learned to save and hire people to help you get what you need for your business. If I had one thing I want the world to know about me it would be that I am consistent! That is a valuable trait to have personally & in business!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hmmmm! I would certainly visit all the black owned restaurants & wine bars that we could get to & of course Cooking With A Twist!!! Maybe a backyard BBQ at my house & a few yoga classes. We would do a few spa days & rent a beach house in Galveston! Hopefully there would be a Beyonce concert during their visit!!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly I would love to dedicate my shout out to my daughter, Deja Owens! She manages Cooking With A Twist, my catering company and also makes sure my Red Velvet Waffle Brand is functioning properly. She helps me in ways unimaginable! She is also an entrepreneur herself & juggles her photography & videography business with grace & poise! I appreciate her input and encouragement to be the best mom & business owner I can be.
