We had the good fortune of connecting with J-Darius and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi J-Darius, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
It all comes back to you knowing you “why”. The reason you are doing your art, business or whatever you have decided to commit yourself to. You have to remember why you’re pursuing your passion and why you’ve sacrificed to share what it is you bring to the world. Holding on to the truth of your “why” will push you to keep going and not give up. For me, I know the singing, music and artistry is one of the avenues that I share light in this world and help people. My love for helping people pushes me to continue my art.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I grew up in a Christian household where gospel music was always playing in our home. I always sang in church and in the school choir. I traveled the country performing in a gospel groups all through college and believed in some way I might become a solo gospel artist. My love for jazz, R&B and soul music was always there, but I felt as though I needed to cover it up in order not to offend people. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to understand that people love all kinds of music and I could be comfortable pursuing the music that best fits my voice and style. I can still hold true to my faith as I share my creativity with the world. The music I make brings thought provoking messages to audiences while providing smooth vocals and groovy instrumentation.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When visiting San Antonio, you have to explore downtown of course. This includes the Riverwalk, The Alamo and staple food establishments like Mi Tierra. The city is one of the largest in the country and provides opportunities for all kinds of experiences. From Six Flags and SeaWorld to many theaters to enjoy the performing arts. There are also great place to shop and enjoy fine cuisine around the city such as The Pearl, The Quarry and La Cantera.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My gifts, ability and drive come from what God has graced me to do what I’m able to do. He has also blessed me with an amazing wife, family and friends. I also want to give a shoutout to Harvey Lincoln and Evan Toombs who have gone above and beyond to help me achieve my dreams.
