We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Fields and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, what is the most important factor behind your success?
This is a tough question. I feel the answer changes depending on the point of my life. For example, I use to think the most important factor behind the success of my business was to help someone achieve their skin goals. Now that I am a little more experienced in life, this is not the most important factor of success behind my brand. In fact, I want to break it down into two parts. My vision of success is still helping people through my spa and with my luxury skincare products to achieve their skin goals but it is also helping other beauty business owners and aspiring beauty business owners build their own empire through product creation. I understand that as a beauty professional we can only see so many clients a day, a week and a month. I want to show other beauty professionals and aspiring beauty professionals how to create their own product lines so their reach is expanded. I also want to build a legacy to leave for my children and my children’s children. I want to show my children and their future children that we can achieve anything we want at any time. As a child I never dreamed I would have my own spa and product line. I want to teach my children, that you do not have to go the traditional route, you can take any path you like as long as you end up reaching your goals. I learned with my own business, I can only see so many clients but I can touch clients all over the world with my products and my knowledge so I inspire to share that with everyone I can!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others. I did not start my business the traditional route. I was trying to create a product to solve a problem. The catch is I was not trying to solve other people’s problem, I was trying to solve my own problem! I was trying to cure or at least soothe my own dry and irritated skin. Before I knew it, I was selling my products to friends and a business was born. Eventually I went back to school for a license in Esthetics. In my mind, I did the whole process in reverse! But the point is, I arrived and I am happy with my current path. What you are most proud of or excited about. I love that 17 years later people still love my products and my services. I am most proud that the brand is still growing. I have recently begun to teach others how to create their own product line and build businesses. How did you get to where you are today business-wise. I did a lot of trial and error. I knew I had an end goal in mind. I worked hard day after day, year after year. I didn’t let my failures stop me. I would get up and try again but with a different method. I am happy to say I learned so much in business and in this beauty industry that I well qualified to teach others. What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. In the beginning, my biggest challenge was explaining to someone how good my product was without them having the ability to try it. I discovered I had to sell me! I had to show my personality. I had to tell you in depth about the products, the features, the benefits. I had to show you how amazing my products were even though you couldn’t touch or smell it until I shipped it! Another lesson I learned, was the excuse I don’t know is not sufficient. As a business owner it is my job to know. It is my responsibility to hire professional help to assist me. I am specifically talking about lawyers and financial professionals. They can help you grow a business to achieve the goals you truly want in the future. That’s just two lessons of hundreds! I could go on and on. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story? J Fields Co is here to help men and women reach their skin goals each and every day. While Jessica Fields is here to help beauty business owners and aspiring beauty business owners grow and scale their brands with their own product lines.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am a down to earth type of woman so I like trying and supporting small businesses. In my opinion they have the best food and customer service anyway. For food we would have to check out Cool Runnings, they have amazing Jamaican food. I also love Spankys. Its a pizza and pasta place off of 610 and Telephone. They also have an amazing happy hour. Try the Texas Tea, trust me. I also love love taco trucks. I have so many favorites its hard to name just one! For fun, we would definitely catch a movie or show at Miller Outdoor Theatre. I make an amazing “fancy” sandwich. I am talking top of the line meats, cheese and all the toppings! I would pack a great picnic basket and a couple of lawn chairs and a blanket. I would also drag my friend out to Galveston. I’ll be honest the water is not pretty but the beach is so relaxing. There is a place called Murdoch’s when you sit on the balcony and just enjoy the breeze.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My sister, Kristina Smith has been an amazing source of support, love and encouragement. Even though she is my little sister she mentors me! Kristina has her own specialities just as I have my own, but she has used her talents to help me push my brand to bigger and greater heights. I can say that my sister is my biggest support and contributor. She truly is my ShoutOut!
