We had the good fortune of connecting with Marie Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Marie, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
The most important and impactful thing I’ve done as a parent is allow my children to see my vulnerability. My children understand that I am human and experience emotions just as they do. I cry, I hurt, I’ve been embarrassed, I’ve been disappointed, I’ve felt unworthy, etc. I’ve expressed these feelings and how they affect me to my children countless times; partly because I have been on the receiving end of “teenage wrath” and they must know that I am not immune to hurt feelings.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a performing artist and my focus is spoken word poetry. I returned to the stage in July 2019 after a 16 year hiatus. I’m most proud of my determination to overcome my fear of performing after so being away for so long.

Nothing about my return was easy! I relocated to Houston from NYC and I was new to the poetry scene. Support was minimal since I didn’t know anyone. I went to different shows throughout the city alone. There were countless times I wanted to leave a show because I didn’t know anyone and I was convinced that no one would be clapping for me. I struggled mentally. I knew I was much older than the poets that I saw, I was less experienced at performing, and I was a bit shy.

Over the last 2 years I’ve built up enough courage, enough love, enough belief, and enough confidence to step on any stage without hesitation. Without doubt. My newest journey includes a book. I plan to use the same formula: courage, consistency, and patience with myself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite spots in Houston include, Lucille’s Restaurant and Discovery Green! Food and beautiful scenery. Rice University has a beautiful campus, perfect for photo shoots and lazy afternoons. The Houston Zoo is perfect for evening strolling and date night! My family is big on arcades so we’ve had several ‘family night’ events at Main Event and Andretti’s! Next would be the Aquarium. There are also plenty of flea markets, pop up shops, and festival-like events happening throughout the city, specifically on weekends.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I participated in a personal development course in 2019 that completely shifted the trajectory of my life. While journeying through Momentum Education for approximately 6 months, I unlocked a confidence and self love that had been hidden away for many years. This program allowed me to remove fear and doubt and opened my heart to compassion and love. I am forever grateful to Momentum Education and the all the relationships and realizations I encountered during my journey. Leadership Team 173.
