We had the good fortune of connecting with Melvin Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melvin, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
In the beginning there was no balance. I was all over the places, but I learned very quickly that it is ok to take a break, its ok to stop responding to customers at an certain time. When you first start out you feel like you have to be on top of everything 24/7 not true you will burn yourself out fast.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Lil Melvin’s Bakehouse started out as a simple idea that has grown into more than anything I ever imagined. When I first started, my ultimate goal was to bake pound cakes that tastes like it came from your grandmothers kitchen. When I saw that a simple but flavorful pound cake was missing in the market I decided to take a leap of faith and try it out. Now 3 years later Lil Melvin’s Bakehouse has grown so much. From just 5 flavors of Pound cakes. We now offer over 15 flavors of pound cakes, 3 flavors of Tea Cakes, over 12 flavor of cookies, and homemade dog treats. Every day presents its own challenge but you learn to adapt. The biggest challenge was dealing with COVID – 19. Before the pandemic I hand delivered to all my customer. I had to figure out something quick. So now we are offering shipping services for most of our products. This among many other changes have been on going. As long as I can continue to provide excellent customer service and great products. We are ready for any challenge that comes our way!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It’s so hard finding places and things to do during a pandemic in Houston. But you just have to be creative in planning. I am more of an outdoors kind of person. I love hang out at the parks like Buffalo Bayou and Discovery green. Also a nice bike ride around the city. Many great food places to eat at I love Graces. And if you are brave during this time We have plenty of bars in Houston you can hang out at. But as always mask up and social distance!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shoutout to my friends who are my family. They push me hard everyday for Lil Melvin’s Bakehouse and give honest feedback and ready to make a delivery or mop the floor on call.
