We had the good fortune of connecting with Toni Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Toni, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risk or as I call it “leaps of faith” is the key to living life! One of my favorite books which has also become a pick me up in my times of uncertainty, is ‘You Are a Badass: How to stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life’, by Jen Sincero. A quote that sticks with me from that book is, “Wanting can be done sitting on the couch with a bong in your hand and a travel magazine in your lap. Deciding means jumping in all the way, doing whatever it takes, and going after your dreams with the tenacity of a dateless cheerleader a week before prom night.” – Jen Sincero. Breaking away from social norms to truly figure out who you are and what works for you can be the scariest yet most exciting time in a person’s life.
Since I was a child I have always been that risk taker. I believe the worst thing someone can tell me is no, and I won’t know unless I try. I started my business Natty Royals in 2016 in St. Louis, MO. While St. Louis will always be home it was time for a change. In January 2020 I decided to take one of my biggest leaps of faith yet. Deciding I wanted to explore and experience more in life was all I needed to take another step in the direction I wanted my life to go. I packed up my car and moved from St. Louis to Houston with $200 in my pocket and no job offers. That didn’t frighten me, because I knew what I set out to do. Once my feet hit H-town it was time to show why we individuals from St. Louis put the stl in “hustle”. Even with a global pandemic hitting less than two months after I relocated, I was determined to keep my business going. Now fast forward to 2022, Natty Royals has launched a website ,certified 200hrs Yoga Instructor booked out vendor shows and pop-up shops in Houston, St. Louis, and Chicago and is now a registered business in Texas. By not allowing others to condemn me and set their ideology of how they think I should live my life I have found peace. Never live life with that “what if” or “I should have” attitude, just go for it!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I’m most proud of it’s my love for what I do. They say if you love what you do you’ll never feel as though you are working. I set to always be intentional about anything I do in life, regardless if it’s making body jewelry or creating a flow that nourishes the body ,mind, and soul. Getting to where I am today was not an easy task by any means. Learning to unlearn toxic traits and toxic ways of thinking isn’t a pleasant journey but I learned in order to feed my energy with what it truly needs to grow I must rid myself of EVERYTHING that’s hindering me. I’ve learned that mindset is everything. What you tell yourself on a daily basis is more powerful than you know. Speak on it, pray on it, claim it and put action behind it! At Natty Royals, adoration for all body types is embedded in the spirit of our products. These pieces are curated with the intention of helping you feel good & inspiring your spiritual awakening.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my bestie was in town the first stop would be the Breakfast Klub for an amazing Wing and Waffle breakfast then off to Discovery Green and the Graffiti wall. Through out the week we would have to make stops and Taste Bar for Brunch , Hike in the Woodlands, take some yoga classes as Black Swan Yoga, Trez Art and wine bar happy hour on Wednesdays(ladies night). Have Game night at FAO arcade and bar, and end our week with Sunday Funday at Amahle.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to scream it from the mountain tops “I would not be where I am today if not for my best friend and business consultant Christianna Hudson owner of Che1 Boutique!!!” In life not to many people will be able to understand you or your dreams sometimes and that’s okay, but there are rare cases in life where you are fortunate to have someone who does, keep them close. From the moment I decided to take a leap of faith my friend was there to help me set my foundation in Houston physically, emotionally, and mentally. For that I will always be grateful.
