We had the good fortune of connecting with V Squad and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi V, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
The most complex, yet straight-forward question an artist is asked; “what am I inspired by?”. I’ll try to avoid sounding cliché, but I do want to answer honestly, so here we go! I’m inspired by life and everything happening around me. Right now the world is full of worry and uncertainty that COVID has caused from Team Vaccination to Anti-Vax, Team Mask to Anti-Mask. Whether we’re tracking life-threatening storms, flooding, earthquakes or wildfires in California. Or still seeking peace in the middle East, one theme that seems to be on the front of everyone’s mind is; “we are certainly in the last days”.
Getting back to how that inspires me, well, one thing we can all agree the world is in desperate need of, is hope. As a devout Christian and Christian Rapper, I believe that hop is found in Jesus. But my task is not to just Bible thump, or pound people over the head about Jesus, or call out sinners. My goal is to spread the gospel in a real and relative way, but without compromise.
So when I’m scrolling through IG, and I see Memes about relationships, I’m inspired to create an album like “VII”, which was released 6/30/2019 on my 7 year wedding anniversary and includes 7 songs celebrating 7 years of love to my wife. Or it could be as simple as hearing a sermon about how Paul was ALWAYS on mission to spread the gospel no matter where he went. Which is how my single “Mission” was inspired/created.
With any and every song you hear from me, it’s always coming from a place of real life inspiration and never just a record created without motivation. What inspires me? The blessing of life all around me, the blessing to be alive and free. My wife, my kids, my Lord and savior Jesus Christ.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Perseverance, patience and a whoooooole lot of praying is what’s keep me going. This road has not been easy and even though I’ve been on this journey for 15 years and counting, I’m just getting started. Overcoming doubt is one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced and still have to face this day in order to overcome. Fear is not of the Lord, so anytime those negative vibes try to sneak in I know the enemy is trying to sidetrack me! Removing distractions has also been a big key for me in getting to where I am. You come across a looooot of creatives in this line of business, and filtering out those who are only there to take, or don’t care to progress your musical success due to their own agendas have to be removed IMMEDIATELY! Time wasted is one thing you can never get back. Sometimes, even though someone may love music just as much as you do, your vision isn’t their vision, so you have to know how and when to work with certain individuals, and know when to keep your distance. Every collab isn’t a good collab.
I’m extremely excited about my new partnership with Premier Global Management and the works my manager Henry and I have in store. Lots of big announcements coming soon! That’s all I’ll say for now, until the next interview, haha!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Is it cliché for the Christian Rapper to shoutout Jesus first, haha? The “reason for the season”, my rock and salvation, my “why”? To God be ALL the Glory in Jesus name! SHOUTOUT TO JESUS!
My wife and best friend, my better half, my other “why?”. “He who finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor from the Lord”. My Proverbs 31 woman, one of the reasons I know scripture to be true as a living testament. I can’t thank this woman that I’m madly in love with enough! The mother of my 4 kids, the woman that makes our house a home. The woman who inspired my debut album “VII” (which is streaming on all platforms). SHOUTOUT TO MY WIFE!!!
My mother! My first and #1 supporter. The first to believe in me and tell me that I could do anything I set my mind to. One of the first to really listen to the words and lyrics of what I was saying and quote them to me when giving feedback about my songs. Love you mom for ALWAYS being in my corner and repping the VSQUADMUSIC banner and NOT LETTING ME QUIT! SHOUTOUT TO MY MOM!
Shoutout to my siblings! More day 1 and #1 supports, especially my little brother who’s rocked the stage with me on numerous occasions. My older brother for blessing me to see the inside of a recording studio for the very first time. That day I knew music was what I wanted to do for life! My pops for always being a versatile lover of all kinds of music. From Red Hot Chili Peppers, to Stevie Ray Vaughn, to The Isley Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Jackson 5, Prince, etc. My pops would sing around the house, had a dope vinyl collection he handed down to me that I still have to this day, and even recorded a few songs. SHOUTOUT TO MY SIBLINGS AND MY POPS!
SHOUTOUT TO MY SQUADRON!!! If you’ve ever streamed a song, liked a post, shared a post, came to a show, watched a music video or supported me in ANY shape form or fashion, YOU are a part of the SQUADRON. Thank you and SHOUTOUT TO MY SQUADRON!!!
