We had the good fortune of connecting with Zion Botanical and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zion, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
From the moment we met we had connected over a desire to branch out of our service industry jobs in pursuit of a more creative and holistic career path. Amidst the start of the Covid-19 pandemic and the initial lockdown, we found ourselves connecting with our community through the care and gifting of houseplants. We first realized we had something when a friend asked for help with bringing plants into her newly opened cafe. People kept asking who was in charge of bringing all the plants into the space and before we knew it we were getting phone calls from others who were interested in our services for both their homes and businesses.

The opportunities continued to present themselves as the interest in interior plants grew. With our knowledge of plants and their care, and interest in aesthetic- we were able to maximize on a quarantine trend to create a business model focused on design, installation and maintenance services in the Nashville area.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
With a focus in design, we are able to go into spaces and work closely with architects and interior designers in a way that many nurseries and plant shops in our area aren’t able to. A lot of the plant related businesses in Nashville are dependent on the client coming to them in search of a product. What sets us apart, is that we go to our client’s space. It’s more personal and tailored to each individual and what they’re looking for rather than pushing sales. As botanical shoppers we consider aesthetic, lighting, budget and client plant knowledge. We offer a wide variety of services beyond installation and maintenance. Clients can request mood board and visual proposals for plant recommendations and placement only and are then provided with all the care tips and local nurseries to source for themselves.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Nashville is a great destination for restaurants and has a great moody bar scene. A coffee stop would be at Hearts Cafe, Peg Leg Porker for BBQ, Dino’s for late night burgers, and Jeni’s has the best ice cream in town. Bearded Iris Brewery for all the IPA fans and craft cocktails at Attaboy. A well-known secret? Bastion has the best nachos in Nashville. 21st Avenue has some of the best boutique shopping and Dashwood is a favorite for vintage finds. And of course plant shops – Gardens of Babylon and Lawrence & Clarke Cacti Co.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our mama’s win credit for the first shoutout! They have been a constant support sharing our excitement through every new project. They remind us to take a break and eat. They pass out our business cards more often than we do and they always pick up the phone when we need to talk after a long day.

Second, would be our dear friend Kate who gave us our first job. She trusted us to help in creating an environment that matched that of a Melbourne cafe bringing a little piece of her home to East Nashville.

Kate, along with many other women in our lives have helped in bringing our vision to life and we wouldn’t be where we are without them!
