We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Luilly and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DJ, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
The word “risk” may be daunting to some, but to me, it’s almost humorous. My entire life, particularly in the music industry, has revolved around taking risks. For example, when I started DJing at 13 or 14, I would sneak into clubs with my uncle, who was a DJ at the time, to help him carry the crates. If I had been caught, the club likely would have closed. Similarly, when I was about 17, I DJed at a casino and had to prove that I was ready to work and give my best.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is my charisma and positive attitude. I’m proud of my relentless work ethic; even when doors closed, I always sought alternative paths to success. The excitement I feel when I finally open the main door is a testament to hard work eventually paying off. With my amazing team of five, we’re unstoppable, each adding a unique element to DJ Luilly. My journey has been challenging, marked by rejections based on my age, ethnicity, and perceived inexperience. I overcame these obstacles by working harder, seeking opportunities, and creating new avenues to showcase my DJ skills and creativity. Key lessons learned include the importance of valuing every person and opportunity, as they can lead to incredible growth and new perspectives. DJ Luilly LLC is a brand that brings happiness to every event, from the logo’s blue and white to live performances, spreading joy worldwide. We are here to share happiness across the globe.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First, I’d make a sign that says “Welcome to the BIG EASY (New Orleans, LA)!” Then, I’d take my friend downtown to walk Bourbon Street, grab a Hand Grenade or Fish Bowl, and bar hop. The next day, we’d have delicious Dominican food at Las Delicias Restaurant around noon, followed by dinner at Morro’s Steak from Larry Morrow, for amazing food, drinks, and vibes. After that, I’d bring my friend to my DJ sets at Empire Nola. While I’m spinning inside, I’d encourage them to check out The Garden or the Pool Area for different parties or events.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I want to thank God, without whom we are nothing. Second, to my family and team, for all the support and love they give me through my ups and downs, and for helping me keep pushing my DJ career. Also, there’s someone who is always there for me and the whole family with his kindness and big heart, “Kepi” from Urban & Kepi. It doesn’t matter how he feels or where he is in the world; he’ll make time for you whether you’ve hit rock bottom or are at the top, and we need more people like him in this world.
