We had the good fortune of connecting with Ariana Adame and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ariana, what makes you happy? Why?
Many things make me happy. Being content is one of the biggest challenges that I take on every single day. Even on my bad days, I still find a way to be happy with myself. Wearing a smile to make others smile is what brings me joy in my opinion, whether if its through teaching my students as a Zumba Instructor or satisfying a customers craving from my candy apple business. Teaching Zumba makes me happy because not only am I succeeding in my goals but I’m helping others succeed their goals. When I see my students happy, that makes me happy. They’re the ones who make me happy and I honestly hope I’m doing the same for them. As far as my candy apple business, Delightful Candied Apples makes me happy because lets be honest, its my baby. I started during the pandemic and didn’t think it would last this long. I may not be popular but I treat Delightful Candied Apples as if it were. My customers make me happy because they always give me feedback whether its good or bad. Taking the criticism has helped me grow into who I am now and who I will be in the future. Being a small business owner has been the greatest thing so far in my life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a Zumba instructor and small business owner is like having the best of both worlds. Well it feels like it can be. I became a certified Zumba instructor almost 6 years ago as of January 2016. I use to take classes when Loretta Bates use to teach here in Sugar Land. I started at 13 years old as a student and became an instructor at 20 years old. Loretta honestly inspired me to become an instructor. She was and still is an INCREDIBLE instructor/ZES (Zumba Educational Specialist) for Zumba. I always loved dancing growing up, and I was always active whether it was sports or just playing outside with the neighborhood kids. I think that’s where my passion with Zumba tied in, because its an exercise but with dancing. Zumba makes you feel like its not a workout. When I became certified, it was somewhat a challenge getting myself out there. I had connections but I needed to break out of my shell. It was hard honestly trying to grow confidence and breaking out of my shell. I was always shy growing up and once I started teaching and growing my following it’s like I could suddenly be myself. Zumba has helped me grow as an instructor and person. Then, the pandemic hit. I was completely out of work. Virtual Zumba wasn’t working for me, and I became lazy just from being at home. I wanted to do something useful! So I put myself and baking skills to work and created my small business, Delightful Candied Apples. All you saw were cookie businesses, chocolate strawberry businesses, and many other baking businesses starting to pop up and become successfully popular. And I remember it brought back a memory years ago when I was working retail in high school there was a cute little kiosk at the mall selling candy apples. They focused mainly on sliced apples though. At least that’s what I can remember. They had the BEST candy apples, if only I could remember the business to shout them out because they were the ones who inspired me to start this small business. Although, my small business isn’t as popular as the ones that are becoming extremely successful, I still like to treat and think of my business being popular and extremely successful. Because, it will be successful. Anything can be when you put your mind to it. I’m not the type to give up easily. Owning a small business is not easy and there’s judgement and criticism. That is what you grow from though! that is how businesses become successful by listening to the feedback and growing from it. I want people to know that I am a hard worker when it comes to my small business, school, and teaching Zumba. Its not just a passion, it is my everyday life that I honestly love. I grew from all three of these passions into who I am now.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My best friend lives in the same area as I do but who says we can’t explore Houston together. That’s our favorite place to be. Our most favorite areas would have to be Montrose and The Heights. When we go to Montrose we love checking out the thrift shops. Such as, Pavement, lo-fi, and buffalo exchange. When it comes to The Heights, we love 19th street. The shops on 19th street are wonderful and we love checking them out every time we go. Vinyl Edge is on 19th street as well and that’s our number one stop. She also has her artwork at The Whimsy Artisan there in The Heights. So if you’re in the area make sure to stop there and buy local artists art work. When it comes to eating, we don’t have a specific spot that we like. However, we are coffee drinkers! going to local coffee shops is one our favorite things to do. Or if I’m out and about I’m usually the first one to discover the coffee shop. The number one place that we absolutely love going to is Luce Coffee Roasters off Ella and 610. Another place that I recently discovered and that I want her to try is Amsterdam Company in The Heights off W 19th street. Their coffee is DELICIOUS! if you’re old enough, I would recommend getting CBD in the coffee. You will want CBD in your coffee all the time after that lol. As far as going out at night, we recently discovered a place called Cidercade in downtown kind of near Warehouse Live. Its a bar with a bunch of arcade games from the 80’s to now. What’s amazing about the place is that it’s only $10.00 for unlimited play and the drinks are pretty reasonable. We love going on adventures together but it’s even better when our friends come along. My city is pretty rad! I love it and I love adventuring Houston with my bestie.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shout out to my family and a couple of friends who have pushed me to continue to succeed with Zumba and delightful candied apples. If it wasn’t for them, I really don’t think I would be where I am at in life. First I want to shoutout and say thank you to my wonderful family. My mom, brother, dad, and my aunt Pam. They have all made an impact on my life and fitness journey. A big special thank you to my mom and aunt pam for always encouraging me and pushing me to go passed my limits. I can’t thank y’all enough, because without y’alls advice and encouragement my fitness and baking journey would not have taken off. Thank you dad and brother for the support and always having my back when I need it.
To my friends, thank you so much for the support and for always being there for me when I need y’all. To my bestest friends; Kally, thank you for being the bestest friend, taste tester, and dance partner I could ask for, more like a sister that I needed in my opinion. shout out to you girlfriend! thank you for ALWAYS having my back and being my ride or die. Raul, thank you for being my number one fan, my motivator, my taste tester, of course my dance partner too, and for supporting everything that I have accomplished. Last but not least, thank you to an amazing coach that I once had and will continue to support because she helped me into wanting to keep pushing forward with my goals and dreams when I wanted to give them up. Coach V, you are an amazing transformational coach and I can’t thank you enough for helping me mentally and physically.
Love you all and thank you all for always being there for me.
