We had the good fortune of connecting with Modupe Ariel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Modupe, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
Born and raised in the DMV! (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia) As I like to say, “Bmore raised me, but Africa made me! I am a first generation Nigerian American so naturally, Africa will always be where my heart is. Africa is also my muse for Oládé Organics. Since I can remember, my parents made it a point to teach us the languages of our ancestors, pass down authentic food recipes, and filled our home with music, arts, and clothing celebrating our roots. It was through this expression of love and fellowship that fueled my desire to share my world with the world! I do remember at one point, being timid to speak on my heritage. Kid’s can be mean and in the 90s-early 2000s, you didn’t experience too many kids that could relate to the plight of an African immigrant household. But when love is at the center of your home, you somehow find the courage to shine through your differences. That was my experience. Baltimore loved on me the same way my family at home did! By the time I reached high school, bringing Nigerian dishes to school became my thing! Yes, in 2005-2007 we were eating Jollof rice and stewed chicken right in the cafeteria! Fast forward 15 years, and Olade Organics aims to do just that; share herbal blends rooted in African Apothecary and handcrafted in love. Each day, I create and blend new recipes, I am reminded of the openness of my classmates/friends in high school and feel safe and inspired to continue to share my world with the world!
What should our readers know about your business?
Oládé is a Yoruba word that simply translates to “Wealth has come” and Oládé Organics is a collection of herbal blends that work in synergy to promote wealth in wellness. I believe wellness begins within, and my blends light the path to high vibrational healing rooted in African Apothecary. From a rejuvenating rising; to a blissful bedtime, my product’s intention is to compliment your daily lifestyle. When all systems and chakras are aligned and working together for our overall wellness… Wealth will come ( Oládé), because surely, “The First Wealth… is Health.”
I started blending herbs out of rebellion. I wanted to explore other alternatives to chemicals and possible side effects I couldn’t even pronounce. I wanted real, simple, and sustainable ingredients. I also wanted a cheaper and safer method to staying healthy without it becoming this tedious task. So, I thrive to incorporate herbs in every aspect of our lives. My mission is for everyone that visits my garden to leave with the tools to self-heal and to explore the effortless beauty of sipping with intention. Most importantly, to self-care without reservations!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The first thing that made me fall in love with Houston, is the food!! So we are definitely feasting and exploring all weekend long! Being from the East coast, local farmers markets are typically experienced during the summer months or on some sort of alternate week schedule. Not Houston! There are Markets nearly every day. So the first stop will be to tour the local market scene. Some of my favorites (you can catch me at any one of these markets as well!) Blck Market and their retail location in Pearland! Railways Market, Montrose, Curb Coalition, Buy Local Market, The Groves Market Place, etc. I love supporting fellow small businesses. I love the view and rooftop from the Marriott downtown Houston. They also have great day pass deals for lazy days by the pool! Houston is also home to great Rose and Butterfly Gardens that we will definitely be exploring!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my Shoutout to my tribe! Who are without them! My tribe includes my family who love me beyond measure and allowed me a safe place to thrive and find my voice. My girls! My day 1’s that keep me accountable and authentic. Right before I launched Oládé Organics, I decided to relocate to Houston, TX, leaving behind the only place that I ever called home. But my tribe held my hand every step of the way… throwing me the best going away party ever! (travel funds and the sweetest notes were included in my goodbye gifts) I truly thought I wasn’t going to be able to handle a new city without them. Everyday the calls came in and the encouragement to launch followed! I launched Oládé Organics and they never left my side! Today my tribe continues to grow and I am grateful to Houston for bringing me my life partner who puts just as, if not more love and energy to my business than I could ever ask for. He is truly the glue that keeps me together. Last but not least, I can not leave out Love.Live.Glow owner and dear friend, Krissy Adams! She gave me my first opportunity in Houston. It was my first market and I barely had inventory, but she encouraged me and put me in a position to do countless markets and shows since. Thank you and I am forever grateful. My tribe is truly the best!
